hard to imagine the entire drawing was done with a mechanical pencil. *** Thick lead, kept fairly blunt, mostly held on its side.

I love the look of just pencils and this one is fantastic. My only reservation
about this would be - how do pencil sketches hold up over time? Do they
need to be more carefully lit than inked art?

Pencils don't fade -- but they do smudge.
Special handling is needed until they are under
glass.

There's a spray fixative that helps reduce that smudging, but only a little.

The thing I love about JB's art is that its got the power, emotion that
the best artists in the past tried to convey - and takes it up several
notches from there. It's what makes JB's style so right for Marvel
characters, because its a continuation of what Kirby, Ditko, Buscema
and others acheived.

Hm, not sure if this has been mentioned yet, sorry if it has:
Cap's expression is the main selling point for me. The whole image is of
course completely amazing, but just take a moment to notice the
execution of his expression.
It's likely there have been previous occasions for a similar portayal of this
kind of emotion in JB's stuff, but the level of intensity seen here fits this
classic scene perfectly. The knotting of his brow, the shape of his eyes
and the shape of Cap's mouth convey--independent of one another--his
power, shock, disgust, which culminate into the realization of what he is
doing, or about to do.
Together, they form a pulverizing intensity.
Beautiful, beautiful ART.
I wish I were an actual 'art-writer-type-person' to do this picture justice
in words.

Wow. That's the only word that describes my reaction. Just look at all the emotion displayed by the three characters on that page. Wow. You've outdone yourself, JB. Just when I think the Doctor Strange piece was my favorite, you gotta come and knock this one outta the park. Bravo, sir. Well done.

This is just what I needed after an extra-long day at work. This particular scene is the commission piece I would ask for if I ever find myself in a postion to purchase one. The Stern-Byrne run was my second attempt at getting into the character of Captain America outside of the Avengers. This issue in general and this scene in particualr were what made Cap my favorite character.
"I've pledged myself to the preservation of life and liberty..." gives my goosebumps goosebumps.

I have to say this may be my favorite... I've said that about the FF and Terrax... then I've said that about the X-Men vs the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants ... next month, I'm sure JB will top himself again with my next new favorite!
