And he doesn't have a great big "A" on his head either and his ears aren't
exposed. The lightning bolts cover them up.

About that "A"...

I never thought it when I was young, but when Ron Lim was drawing Captain America, his "A" looked a lot like Captain's bars to me. Now whenever I see the "A" I see Cap's rank as well.

Anyone remember when Rob Liefeld drew Cap without the A?  The first thing I thought was that he took away his rank (and then that he ruined a darn good run by Waid & Garney).

Does anyone else see the "A"?  Not now that I mentioned it, but before, like I did?  JB?

And I am not saying that that is what was intended.

Beautiful work.  I'd love to be able to stand over your shoulder and watch you while you are at work.  (perhaps for an additional fee with a commission?)

Thanks for sharing.  These just keep getting better and better.

****

One of my earliest online encounters with the Deliberately-Missing-the-Point mentality came in this context. I was appalled at Leifeld's handling of Captain America, just in general, but when it came to the "A" I pointed out that Cap was just one of many characters from that vintage (and later) who wore some version of the American Flag as their costume/uniform. Without the "A" there was nothing to particularly distinguish Captain America from the other "star-spangled" characters. "It is," I observed, "the 'A' that makes him Captain America."

"Really?" came a response. "I thought it was Steve Rogers that made him Captain America!" Huff puff, huff puff -- and what exactly does Steve have to do with a discussion of the costume design?

Ah, well....

Not sure what you mean JB? Leifeld's Captain provides me with hours of entertainment.....

All he needs is some leather bondage gear, and we have a great new costume design for Ultimate Cap.

Wonderful work - and from a great series of comics that for me rank as some of my very, very favourite..I thought Rubinstein's inks were a great complement to your work, and the stories were excellent...in fact, they were the first hint I had in those pre internet days that the artist might have a great deal to do with the story, since they were drawn by JB and, I got to thinking, 'darn isn't it true that every book he works on - even without Claremont - has the most interesting stories?'

Great pencils there, JB. That run on Captain America is one of my favorites of yours (and Roger Stern's). I was so happy to find the out-of-print tpb on eBay a while back.

There is an animation made from that Liefeld Captain America drawing circulating on the Internet in which Cap's... er, breasts... are bouncing up and down.

With Rob`s rendition, now during a battle, Cap can nestle a can of beer on his collar bone with the greatest of ease. Thanks Mr. Liefeld!
