My (more or less) annual reading of Sally Beauman's DARK ANGEL. This is one of my favorite novels, a very Daphne du Maurier-ish Gothic romance/mystery.
Just finished reading Peter Beagle's THE LAST UNICORN and the sequel TWO HEARTS (that I didn't even know existed). The film version of THE LAST UNICORN is apparently very faithful; there wasn't much in the book that I didn't recall from the movie. A light, enjoyable read. I liked the sequel even better. Possibly because I didn't have foreknowledge of what was going to happen, and possibly because the prose was less self-consciously whimsical.

Finishing up Donald Rumsfeld's memoir, KNOWN AND UNKNOWN, and in the middle of Stephen Hunter's fictional treatment of the JFK Assassination, THE THIRD BULLET. To be honest, JFK Assassination speculation generally bores me, but I like Hunter, so I'm reading this one. Just finished Stephen King's THE SHINING, and about to start DOCTOR SLEEP.

Today I finished Max Brook's WORLD WAR Z in basically one sitting -- quick even by my standards. Shrewd, funny, poignant and at times chilling.
THE WALKING DEAD, in comparison, looks shoddy and one-note. And it makes that tedious Brad Pitt film looks like a third rate video game.

Just finished LEAGUE OF DENIAL: THE NFL, CONCUSSIONS, AND THE BATTLE FOR THE TRUTH by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru. Fantastic book. Sad, frightening, frustrating and exhausting all in one breath. If you're a fan of pro football, it's a must-read.
Started THE RIVER OF DOUBT: THEODORE ROOSEVELT'S DARKEST JOURNEY by Candice Millard about Teddy's trip down a tributary of the Amazon after his failed run for the Presidency in 1912. So far, so good.

Just started (and almost finished) Dr Sleep, too.
It suffers by comparison to the original, which stands as one of King's best; but I'll hold final judgement until I finish.

If it was called anything else, I might have thought it was a decent action flick.
The book is a sharp look at the social, political, economic and religious impact of the apocalypse, and how the world comes together -- or doesn't -- to deal with the global catastrophe.
The movie was two hours of Brad Pitt running and shooting things, and more or less saving the world single handed.

I'm in the middle of Troy: Fall of Kings, the last in a trilogy of historical fiction by David Gemmell. This book was completed by Gemmell's wife, Stella, after his death. It's been a great series that brings the saga of Troy to life.

For me, his novels are like John Byrne's comic art, on a level above all else.
