Dave drew Logan with arm hair when out of costume, and one of the first things I asked when assigned to the book was if it would be okay to start drawing the arm hair on what were obviously bare arms in his costume.

Thanks JB.  I never really thought about it before this.  Neat bit of trivia.

I guess I would have to consider the intent when considering at costume evolution rather than how long it was worn. If the Savage Land or Arcade costumes were intended to be permanent (for however long permanent is) then sure, they would be part of the evolution.

I wonder how much intent can really be considered when someone knows he's working on his last issue?

Curious. It sounds like there might have been a bit of sour grapes from
Dave about leaving the book.

To put Wolverine into an outfit that's a bitch to draw in his last issue
with that note...

Did it seem like there was an implied "Muh Ha Ha Ha!"at the end or
was this something the story dictated?

It was literally decades before I was able to assemble to full story on Dave's departure from X-MEN.

As I have mentioned before, when Archie Goodwin offered me the job, he told me Dave was leaving voluntarily, since Marvel desperately needed to make the book monthly, and Dave understood he could not handle that schedule.

Only a few years ago, Terry Austin told me the full story, beginning with Archie approaching Terry to ask if he would be interested in inking the book if I was interested in penciling it. Archie had been impressed, apparently, with the job Terry and I had done on STARLORD, and thought we'd be a good fit for the X-Men. Unfortunately, all this was going on without Dave knowing about it until it was a done deal and he was "invited off".

Perhaps I was naive to have simply accepted the version Archie gave me originally, but I was eager to do the book, and the way Archie told the story Dave came across as quite the noble figure, leaving his "children" so that they could have a greater chance to thrive.

The true story certainly explains a good deal of the hostility Dave directed towards me over the years.

Certainly causes the line at the bottom of #108 to read a lot differently now.

"This book is dedicated with respect and admiration to Dave Cockrum -- who helped make the dream a reality."

"I'm not dead -- Dave Cockrum."

That line referenced the dedication in 106, to Bob Brown, who had died before the issue was published.

I'm not familiar with the "Noseless" period because I had dropped the X-Men prior to the time because Colossus joined Magneto. I remember picking up an issue at Waldenbooks and looking at it wondering WTF with Wolverine. I'll assume that was the Joe Mad period that some of the younger readers at my LCS refer to as the "Good Ol' Days" of the X-Men. It's always fun to compare what the good old days are between generations.

After Magneto pulled the adamantium out of his body, he "reverted" to
a noseless beast with bone claws. The explanation was something
lame like; the metal on his skeleton was keeping him in check. This
despite having already released Weapon X.

Making Wolverine "noseless" is marginally ironic, given my original design for Sabretooth and the insistence of so many artists on drawing him with a pronounced nasal appendage.

That causes the line to read more differently still!

Here's what was tickling my memory: The blog at
http://www.collectormodel.com/category/marvel/
mentions creating the Wolverine model kit to be convertible between the different outfits. Hmm... it appears they have actually been successful at getting it out in time for "The Wolverine" movie.
