One thing I am liking from Mr. Byrne's work - commissions, his books, whatever - is that so many of his characters actually SMILE. As if they like what they're doing, who they are, just having fun at that moment.

Too many times, I've seen art where main characters, background characters, or whomever either has a completely neutral look or a standard grimace. Or possibly that evil grin that some supervillains have, just before perpetrating something wretched.

So why can't super heroes have fun? My God, if I could just fly, I'd have to wear a mouthguard to keep the bugs off my teeth, because I couldn't stop smiling.

I suspect that it may be due to too many writers or artists thinking that heroes NEVER consider that what they're doing is a good thing, or a fun thing, sometimes... they ALWAYS have to be focused on their dire situations or their grim attitudes towards crime.

Thankfully, Mr. Byrne gets the idea of fun. (And my favorite Byrne smile is still probably Krypto...)

JB: "Doing a little online research on that other ALPHA FLIGHT 1, I found a website that provided a synopsis -- a 72 paragraph synopsis. And long paragraphs at that!"

I was wondering what Claremont was up to these days.
