Maybe impeachment is closer than we think:

My problem with Paul Ryan is the same problem I have with a lot of Republicans: they lack the courage of their convictions. As party, their (admittedly oversimplified) philosophy seems to be "give rich people as much money as possible, pay for it by gutting the safety set, and wait for the magic to happen." But that's not what they campaign on, they come up with BS rhetoric to defend their bills, etc.

So the Republicans who feel that way try to avoid publically admitting it and the Republicans who don't feel that way can't be bothered to work against it (unless they think it'll hurt their re-election chances; maybe).

Having the courage to stand up to Trump is the least of their worries.

If the Reps didn't stand up to Trump prior to him taking the nomination a year ago I don't think it is likely they will stand up to him now that he is president. Unfortunately, the psycho circus peanut won't be opposed, and possibly shouldn't, until the 2018 elections.

it's a tough one because Trump is such an embarrassment, but the chaos and ineptitude of Trump and his cronies may just prevent the Republicans from doing too much damage.

That may be true, on a legislative level, but it is horrifying to see the
societal effects that he's already stoked the flames of an actively
encourages. This damage is not easily dismissed or undone.

I don't see any preferable outcome, until at least 2018 or more likely 2020.  It's not like impeaching Trump will result in Hillary being President.  In that case, we end up with Pence -- a man whose beliefs are even worse, from my perspective, than Trump's, and who may just be more effective.

The US has managed to serve itself quite a shit sandwich. Nobody wants to finish it, but the alternative to taking a few more bites until 2018 might be worse. The damage is done and I fear this won't be undone for decades. Staying the course until 2018 might be less damaging than pealing this onion before the end of the year.

45's conduct and behavior may have done global damage to democracy. I wonder what kind of dictators and thugs will feel empowered by this guy's ability to successfully double speak and obfuscate his way to the presidency.

THOM PRICE: In that case, we end up with Pence

Pence is vile, no question, and would install an evangelical Christian theocracy if not for that pesky Constitution.  I fear a Pence presidency and the effect it will have on the rights and the way of life of many in our country.  That said, Pence is at least capable of thought, insight, reflection, and restraint.  I don't fear that he will become unhinged and lead us into nuclear conflict.  Trump is exactly the kind of no insight, no self-control, self-obsessed, criminal imbecile who would launch nukes.  His own words indicate he's itching to do it.  In this Sophie's Choice, I'll take Pence and years of a damaged country (which will be corrected in time*) over the end of civilization.

*I know this is horrible to say given the people who may/will be harmed by Pence's policies until those corrections occur. I'm also aware that Pence will probably not do anything about climate change, and some see that as the same as Trump with the nukes.

Very well said, Eric.

While the shenanigans are equally horrifying and comedic, damage is getting done. More doing away with regulations for clean air and water, and the dismantling of Dodd-Frank.

While the shit show gets headlines, terrible things that affect us all are quietly getting done.
