Oh, wow, that is shocking. Silence of the Lambs was incredibly influential and incredibly well made.

I haven't seen many of his other films, but SILENCE OF THE LAMBS ranks so high among my favorite films that Demme is a favorite director for that alone.

RIP

Very sad to hear this. SILENCE... and STOP MAKING SENSE are immortal classics.

One of the very few Directors who can lay claim to making the elusive "perfect' film: SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.

RIP.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.

***

The legacy of Lambs cannot be underestimated either. Think about how many serial killers-themed films and TV series we had before it came out and then consider the wave of imitations that followed afterwards.

I am so saddened by this - he was one of my favorite directors. He was certainly one of the most versatile and idiosyncratic, directing comedy, drama, documentary and music will equal skill, sensitivity, and artistry

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is a an all-time favorite, and the Criterion edition reveals that Demme was really the engine behind bringing it to the screen and giving it the tone that makes it a classic

I have seen STOP MAKING SENSE so many times that I can't even count. I had the VHS before the DVD, and I played them both constantly, along with the soundtrack. If you ever get a chance to see this one in the theater, do it. And ask them to turn it up. You can read David Byrne's tribute to Demme here:

MAN FROM PLAINS is his best doc - it's about Jimmy Carter, following him during a book promotion.

MURDER INCORPORATED - this is a short music video of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. It captures the band in small (but historically significant) New Jersey club soon after they reunited. It captures the energy of their live performances.

SWIMMING TO CAMBODIA - Two of my favorites join forces - Spalding Gray and Jonathan Demme. Now we have lost both of them.

MARRIED TO THE MOB - my favorite comedy by Demme. I think SOMETHING WILD gets more attention, but this one never fails to make me laugh.
