We all know it was ordered as a pilot, but it got a series pick up yesterday by the CW.  It joins five other Berlanti series on the network: ARROW, FLASH, LEGENDS, SUPERGIRL and RIVERDALE.

Good choice. Not overpowered (Supergirl) and not street level entirely (Arrow.) I liked Black Lightning quite a bit for that first run... Tony and Trevor knew their business!

And the Flash tie-in was nice too.

Wait, what?

Oh. Were you talking about the comic series?

And if Sinbad isn't in this in some capacity, fail.

Brian - certainly I was talking about the comic series. Has Black Lightning appeared in other format? I don't recall him appearing on "Justice League / Unlimited" or in "Brave and the Bold."

And the Flash tie-in doesn't involve the Flash... I meant his "universe."

-----

He was in the Outsiders episodes of BRAVE AND THE BOLD and had
some cameos in other episodes. He was also Static's mentor in
YOUNG JUSTICE.

Eric, the way I read your statement, I thought you were saying he had already appeared in the TV universe's shows. After catching on to the "Tony and Trevor" comment, I figured I was mistaken.

As for other formats:

So he was on B&B. I didn't watch those Outsiders episodes, but yes, it would make sense he was on it.

No, the ones I thought I might have missed were the little five minute bits on the DC Animated Hour that had Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Especially since they had one about Vibe... so obviously nothing was off limits! :)

There was a lot to like about Black Lightning. I especially liked that his costume included a mask ATTACHED to a wig... a pretty good way to throw off identity seekers, I thought.

Gonna look forward to this one. Guardedly, as I do with any DC property these days, but I've pretty much liked Berlanti's takes on DC. Not entirely... but enough.

I'll have to judge the show on its own merits, but already I'm feeling weary of the Berlanti shows. A new take would be welcomed.

I hope BLACK LIGHTNING is a success, but would have preferred a live action
STATIC.

So it's been confirmed that BLACK LIGHTNING will not be part of the
Arrowverse.

Like Wallace, I would have preferred a show about Static. I think that
would have fit the CW's brand a bit better too.

I was hoping it would be part of the Arrowverse.

I don't watch any of the CW shows so this is just a disinterested observation, but it's funny how anyone touching the DC characters can't seem to help but to over-complicate things.  Not only are DC's movie and TV franchises separate, but now the TV shows are in three separate silos?

The trailer looks pretty good; whether I watch or not will depend on how many episodes.  22 episodes is too much, but if this is in the 10 to 13 range I may give it a go.

It looks like all the other CW-verse shows.  So I'm sure to be lukewarm to it.

Just had to sigh that the 'black experience' is shown yet again to be centered around "the hood" and "gangs".

I was hoping this time around this character could explore broader themes.

Just like the other CW shows....I'll watch...but I ain't committed to hang on.

David, have you read any of the Black Lightning comics?  What's in the trailer is pretty much taken from the books.  (They switched it up a bit with making him retired before having to un-retire though.)

Battling the 100?  From the original series by Isabella & Von Eedon.

Battling street thugs trying to take over the neighborhood and school?  Take from the Isabella & Newell series.

So they're mixing in a lot from various sources.  I wonder if he'll still be a former Olympic athlete....

The original premise for BL in the 1970s was him a teacher in the not so good side of town. So, I like that they are keeping the school angle and the issues of street gangs and such. I think from the previews it's going to delve into how much of that is supported by the criminal organization of 100

Not thrilled about him being a middle-aged man with teen-age powered kids though. That's a much later version of the character as Johns was trying to bring in all these legacy characters related to the Kingdom Come mini. I like the idea that Jefferson Pierce is a guy who made it out of the neighborhood, gained some fame as an athlete and returned to help others. I think seeing that struggle and him being a guy returning now as an adult after some years away and a novice hero allows him to be the viewer's eyes into the milieu.

Also the costume just strikes me as too much, I prefer him in his more street level look. For once, the "Arrow" leathers look combined with the colors from one of his first two series would've fit the character.

Shame it's not part of the Arrow-verse since Black Lightning also faced Merlyn. It was reading the BL trade that I discovered that the comic Merlyn was actually linked to the League of Assassins. So, there's an overlap in history in the comics that the shows won't be able to take advantage of. Just seems short-sighted to rule that out from the start.

Bit ironic segregating their black character from the
rest of the CW universe,i think it would have been
better to be part of the universe.

@Kevin

No, not a particularly big DC fan, let alone Black Lightning specifically.

And I can appreciate the show being closely tied to the source material. That's what we seem to want out of these things.

BUT...I do grow tired of black characters tied to the usual "urban" narrative.

I get it from Luke Cage and it worked well on the Netflix (mostly because Cottonmouth was so compelling).  But I would love it if Luke went to Paris next season....and fought a horde of alien mimes or something.

Anything but the usual "save the 'hood" themes....

I can get why they might not want Black Lightning on Earth-1 since the Flash is supposed to be the first superpowered hero public knows about*, but why not at least put him on Earth-38 with Supergirl?

*Even this could have been dealt with by making his pre-retirement career not widely known about, like how they handled JSA existing during World War II. Heck, they could even make a point about people ignoring a black hero.

I'm just gonna say... this new costume is one of the most horrid redesigns I've ever seen, for TV or movies:

Image result for black lightning tv show

I mean really, to me this is a total eyesore... why does Hollywood have such an insatiable desire to overdesign everything?  Is there no costume designer who adheres to  "beauty in simplicity" anymore?

I don't love that take, but to be fair, the original was not exactly simple or restrained.

Looks like they're getting Black Bolt and Black Lightning confused.
