Easy for me: Superman!

When Superman story is on model (Superman the Movie, JB's run on the character, Garcia-Lopez), he's everything a superhero should be.

For me, one thing that Superman has in common with King Arthur in Boorman's Excalibur: Much like "The land and the King are one" so that a restored Arthur meant a restored kingdom, a restored Superman means a restored superhero genre. Lose Superman and you've lost the genre. Simplistic? Sure. However I think that the current state of superhero comics points to this being more true than not.

I wanted to agree with OP Mr. Shepard, but then I realized that I needed to care about my favorite character, in all of their iterations.

So for me, it has to be Nexus, It probably has something to do with Baron/Rude basically owning the character, and that keeps a consistency, I need.

Superman! Silver Age, Bronze Age, Man of Steel, whatever (haven't read a ton of Golden Age stuff), he's the man.

Spider-Man. I first discovered him in Marvel Tales. Can't recall the issue number but it was the first appearance of the Lizard. I was hooked!

Modesty Blaise. Never tainted by lesser writers, she remains as Peter O'Donnell created her. She arrived fully formed from day one and was superbly written for the next 38 years! (all this applies to Willie Garvin as well).
