I did a search and it looks like a "favorite character" question hasn't been asked for few years now. So....

Who is your favorite character. I know it's moot to say this next part, but you can only have ONE favorite character.

And it would be great to read WHY that character is your favorite.

So my all-time favorite is:

Captain Mar-Vell (during the 70s to early 80s)

I always liked the red and blue costume. I liked cosmic powers, energy projection, flight, FTL travel, strength, endurance, cosmic awareness.....all good stuff.

My perception of Mar-Vell (even if this might be an inaccurate recollection) is that he is one of those heroes with a stronger-than-normal sense or honor and integrity.

Easy:
Superman.

Brought me into comics, and I kept reading him after I'd dropped everything else from DC/Marvel (before it finally ended with Nu52).

Has to be Superman.

The guy spawned a genre and an industry (if that's the right terminology). I admire him when he is at his best. "My" Superman is Mr Byrne's (prior to that, I had only read a few cartoons and seen movies/cartoons).

Superman has been a pivotal part of my life. I hope that does not sound absurd. I can't say I follow DC currently (aren't there two Supermen?), but at his purest, he's an inspiration to me.

Once, this question would have been SO easy to answer. But with all the off-model versions that have been appearing onTV and in movies, as well as in the comics themselves, it becomes virtually impossible.

If I named, say, Captain America, I would expect the response to be "Which one?"

The original Captain Marvel. As a kid, I didn't read monthly comics. I had three books: Batman & Superman:From the 30's to the 70's & Shazam!:From the 40's to the 70's. I constantly read these over & over and enjoyed all three but it was Captain Marvel I enjoyed the most. To me, his adventures were the most fun & his villains the most colorful.

The Beast. Hank McCoy Smart and funny. Though he is subject to the "which one?" question JB mentions above. I like Hank in his more human and furry incarnations, but not the cat-thing.

Batman, as I was introduced to him (Adams era). While
not realistic, as such, he is, in a comic book context,
a self-made hero. His backstory of coming from such
tragedy but not succumbing to it, the fact that he uses
his brains as much as his fists, that edge of
spookiness...love at first sight.

Applying JB's cogent "which one?" proviso, I would answer:

Lee-Kirby's Thor.

I'll go with the Lee/Ditko/Romita, Sr. Spider-Man.

My favorite has changed several times over the years. But the one i return to more than any other is Spider-Man.  Most specifically the Romita/Lee era Spider-Man.
