The same story could have been done without Sybok being Spock's brother.

This is a flaw which has crept into Marvel over the years, especially into the X-Men under Chris. Everything has to be touching everything else.

Quite a few seem to be jumping on that bandwagon, i.e. the previous JAMES BOND film.

I don't think it really does much for me. I don't mind things NOT touching other things. And the same with villain relationships. It does not make a superhero film richer for me if the villain is revealed to be the roommate of the hero's cousin (or whatever they go with).
