No link as it's a paper magazine, but as a subscriber to technology magazine WIRED, I was intrigued by an article pertaining to German musicians Grandbrothers, who make electronic music using a grand piano.

The software controls the hammers and Arduino microcontroller. It controls how loud they play (and when). It creates sequences and patterns. Lukas Vogel, one half of the duo, records the music played by the hammers and piano - and then plays it back in real time.

Are they talented? I guess they are.

Do I like electronic music? Next to metal, yes I do.

But will piano music virtually controlled by software ever be as charming as piano music played without any digital assistance? I'm not so sure.

See Conlon Nancarrow, who used mechanical pianos controlled by paper rolls to make what sounded pretty much like electronic music before synthesisers and sequencers had been invented.

I've done a cursory search and will read more later. Sounds fascinating, thanks.
