Interesting. The apostrophe indeed replaces a dropped vowel even when it is the possessive form. Tis great to learn new things. Also, I used to write decades with an apostrophe until quite recently when I discovered it wasn't the norm anymore. And my pet peeves is French people who aren't very good at English and insist that is okay to place an apostrophe before the plural -s -> Winner's. Oh how I hate it.

Greengrocers are the worst in my area. Continually see signs such as "apple's for sale". Same with cafes. "Menu's online" is one. Menu's what?

Pretty much every hand-written sign advertising food for sale. from supermarket produce to those pastel-chalk menu boards outside bars/ restaurants, contains misused apostrophes. The really bad ones are professionally printed.
