I know him from Star Wars, wondered why so little was known. Another of my childhood heroes that deserved so much more.

I had no idea of his other, just as important, if not more so, achievements. That he has been in such financial conditions. I cannot reconcile

It is fascinating looking back at who had their fingers in which pies in Star Wars. When it came to the models/designs of the ships, Colin Cantwell had as much input as anyone.

The X-Wing, for example, is kind of fascinating. Lucas proposed a kind of space faring dragster, with a long nose and the pilot way in the back. Cantwell added the split wings with the guns. Joe Johnston refined it, beefing up the body and adding the lip on the end of the nose to stop if looking "obscene".

McQuarrie's gift was to realise it visually in a way that people could actually glimpse the finished product years before the special effects had even been begun.
