Personally, this makes about as much sense as bringing back to life an extinct animal species:

It died a death 16 years ago. From what I am told, it wasn't a success creatively (it certainly failed financially).

Just seems pointless.

The XFL failed for multiple reasons. But the scramble for the ball that led to a lot of players being injured, plus having wrestling announcers instead of actual sports announcers call the game didn't help.

I am surprised that there are rumours of an XFL comeback (I accept rumours can turn out to be unfounded).

What's next, bringing back the WBF?

Bringing it back would be a huge mistake, but if it has to happen:

1. Ditch the scramble for the ball. Too many players got hurt from that, and it's idiotic.

2. DO NOT use whoever designed the uniforms and logos for the original XFL. Most of the logos sucked.

3. Get actual sports announcers, instead of using wrestling announcers.

4. Make German Suplexes a legal form of tackling.

Good point. Any particular names in mind?

I saw a tweet pertaining to how Trump could be associated with the XFL. No doubt (if that happens) he'll use it to attack the NFL, being the mini-brained, thin-skinned 'president' he is.

That's basically what Trump used the USFL for, so why would it be any different today?

I can't see it working when it flopped 17 years ago.

The XFL return is well and definitely screwed.

Dick Ebersol's son, who worked for the XFL, is launching his own 8-team football league, the Alliance of American Football.

Now, you'd probably think `so what?', but....

His league will debut well before the XFL. It's supposed to start next February. The XFL won't be back until 2020.

Vince McMahon is funding the XFL out of his own pocket. Ebersol has backers and investors, including the billionaire who backed Hulk Hogan's lawsuit against Gawker.

Ebersol's league will have their initial game and championship game on CBS, and a game a week on CBS Sports, plus other games available through an app. The XFL will probably end up on the WWE Network....

Former NFL coaches and players will be working with Ebersol's league, including Hines Ward and Jared Allen. Allen is one of the backers.

What I don't like? No kickoffs or onside kicks. 2 point conversions required for all touchdowns. Instead of kickoffs, teams start with the ball on their own 25 yard line. Instead of onside kicks, the losing team gets the ball on their own 35 yard line, but it will 4th down and 10.

Some of those changes are to speed up the games and some to prevent injuries.

So kickers will pretty much only be there for field goals, I guess.

Yeah, the XFL is completely screwed.

I'd be surprised if either organization has any real long term success.

I'll be adding the XFL to the list of failed non-wrestling McMahon ventures: WBF, his one boxing match, etc, etc.

Ignoring that there is such a thing as too much football being an obstacle, I look at this way:

There are a lot of good players out there who don't make it to the NFL. Some of them end up in Canada, while others end up in Arena football. (Though being in an Arena League doesn't necessarily mean you're a good player....)

This new league is going to have 8 teams with 50 man rosters.

Any player who decides to wait and try out for the XFL rather than try out for this new league is an idiot. Unless they don't like the locations of the franchises or the XFL does something incredibly stupid and offers guaranteed money, which won't happen.

By the time the XFL starts putting teams together, they'll have the cream of the crap. Meaning they might have a lot of players that even the Cleveland Browns (or Lions prior to about a decade ago) wouldn't touch.

Do I think either league will be successful? No. The new league plans to launch soon after the Super Bowl, which is a big mistake. But I think they have a better chance than the XFL. Which I believe has...no chance in Hell.
