Am I just irredeemable old? Cuz this looks AWFUL to me. Like Spielberg got a brain transplant from Michael Bey.
Edited to add the spoiler tag in the subject line~Matt

I checked the trailer out. I can't honestly say I spotted much of a plot in there.

I should have been the perfect audience for the novel, but I hated it. Ernest Cline is a bit if a hack writer. His follow-up Armada was also quite bad.
The trailer also had a bunch of stuff that wasn't in the book, which makes me think they couldn't get the rights to most of the things referenced in the book.

I enjoyed the novel, but it’s basically 80’s nostalgia porn. I describe it as a Young Adult novel written for 40-year-olds. I’m not sure if anyone who was older than their teens in the 80’s would get as much out of it.
The Iron Giant looks out of place (and wasn’t in the book), since that movie didn’t come out until 1999. I’m guessing he’s a stand-in for one of the anime big robots that showed up in the book.
My other issue is the casting of Olivia Cooke’s character. Her character is repeatedly described as Rubenesque to the point that the author seemed insecure that a zaftig girl could be considered attractive. So they cast an actress with a slender figure.

The second trailer gave more of an idea about the plot. Looks interesting but I hate the color palette.

The trailers make the movie look like nothing more than a monstrously overcrowded take on Tron. Mark Rylance looks amusing as the eccentric dead tech genius, but that's about the only thing that appealed to me.

Apparently the book is laden with Rush references,i may have to find it on Kindle! Isn`t this the film that Spielberg shot parts of in The Black Country/Birmingham to stand in for a post apocalyptic future?

Speaking to the book, it *very* much helps to be a video gamer dating back to the early days, as well as a fan of MMOs. As to the movie, it looks like it would be a fun movie on it's own, but as an adaptation with any kind of source fidelity? Not so much.

As usual, trailers can be deceptive.
Having loved the book, I should point out that the story is about how popular culture shapes who you are. Not just the mass of it as a whole (which is impossible to experience in detail) but your specific path through it.
In order to win the riches of dead mega-billionaire, the "Egg Hunters" of the story have to discern intimate details about him from his specific journey through the pop-culture of his day (the 80's). They do this pretty much by living it: listening to his favorite music, watching his favorite movies and mastering his favorite video games, etc.
Comparing the sort of random 80's reference-dropping in Atomic Blonde, Ready Player One is more of a of period-piece-in-absentia for the characters who must immerse themselves in a culture that isn't theirs. This has consequences, many of which are quite negative--think Internet Addiction combined with Lotto Mania all on steroids.
In a very contemporary twist, The Martian author, Andy Weir, loved the story so much that he wrote a (good) fanfic short about one of the characters, which Ready Player One author Ernie Cline loved so much he declared it Canon.
The world can be pretty weird these days...

What makes you think that? I didn't see any colossal deviations?

"What makes you think that?"

Well right away I was put off by the casting. The physical appearance of the characters, vs the avatars they create for themselves is a pretty important part of the book, and the actors are just WAY too pretty and perfect.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I'm also a long time gamer dating back to the 70s and was a teen in the 80s. I'm all in on this movie.

I think this looks interesting for nostalgia. I tend to like Steven Spielberg movies and trust he'll make this entertaining.

First heard about the novel when it was mentioned in G-Fan Magazine due to appearances by franchise characters from both Tsuburaya and Toho...
...Not sure the movie got the licensing rights to those characters, but the RX-78 Gundam showing up might give me the push to see it.

Trevor>>and the actors are just WAY too pretty and perfect.<<
Fine, I guess. That's all pretty subjective. I expect I could agree with Olivia Cooke, but Tye Sheridan? At worst, he's too fit, and Wade does get fit in the book (if they bother to include that). Also, It looked like his avatar was prettier with the nose smaller than his real one (like in the book). Come to think of it (from the trailer), Olivia Cooke's Avatar looks rather more statuesque than she is in real life. Cooke's figure is certainly off the book-model, but I don't think it's so great a sin as Linda Cardellini as Velma was, or Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.
Also, as adaptations go, the trailer had scenes I recognized from the book. So far, so good...
Note: Even if they were able to get ALL the licenses, there's still a whole bunch of the stuff from the book they'd have to cut for time. We'll have to see how important it was. I'm willing to trust Spielberg on that.

Confirmation that ULTRAMAN will not be appearing in the movie due to licensing issues.

Just came back from seeing this film. Goofy fun movie. Tons of references, of which some were hilarious. I don't often laugh out loud in a theatre but I did so quite few times during this one.

Just got back from seeing it... Fun, but visually exhausting. Didn't come away from the film with an urge to see it again, like I did with BLACK PANTHER and PACIFIC RIM 2.
Easter Egg-wise, I was more pleased to see a certain iconic robot make an appearance in both The Oasis and the real world towards the end, than the one I've previously mentioned up-thread.

I quite enjoyed it, never had this much fun in a movie for some time. And emphasis of fun. A fair amount of detail to take it.
Watered down the novel a fair bit though. It's the same story, but some of the characters have been changed, and a lot of the nastiness has been removed.
I can compare this to the changes made to the film Jurassic Park, from the novel. Very similar.
That said, haven't had this much fun in a film for quite some time, the second challenge had me smiling from ear to ear, a wonderful homage to one of my favourite films.

I think the iconic robot Bill is referring to is Gundam. Though strictly speaking, a Gundam is a military vehicle, not a robot.
