It's never a good idea to explain why fictional 'future'  characters are unfamiliar with technology that didn't exist when their stories were first released. With all the retconning that goes on in 'NuWho', it's stupid to think the First Doctor would have no clue about 2010s-level technology.

The episode was written as if the first Doctor was 'native' to 1963,,,or, at least, implied that he was some sort of product of non-PC, mid-20th-century Britain, who was as familiar with that time period as the 12th is with 'our present'. It just didn't work.

But you're looking at this from a human, not a Time Lord perspective.

From a Time Lord perspective I would absolutely expect him to have some understanding, awareness or at least be open to different kinds of technology.
