For us U.K. members Christmas 1977 was the release of Star Wars,my main memories are of queuing around the block to see it at the local cinema, and just missing getting in,having to wait outside for the next showing! The sense of awe as the seemingly endless Star Destroyer passed overhead at the start. The state of the art visual effects, the sound design,THAT score! So much to love! Emerging from the cinema and wanting to go straight back in to have my mind blown once again! I remember car stickers being given to the first viewers `I`ve Seen Star Wars` and being sooooo jealous that those gits had seen it before me! To think that Blake`s 7 was released on BBC tv at around the same time with an FX budget of £50 per episode...how could they compete?
It opened in Leicester Square on 27th December and then, at the end of January, started a phased roll out to the major cities. Itís likely that Birmingham got it around 29th January 1978. I was in Huddersfield and I remember it was near March before I got to see it.
I meant the title as a Sergeant Pepper nod James, not that it was literally 40 years ago to the day! I just remember the hype hitting maximum at Christmas, then seeing it shortly after. One memory is sitting through The Oscars to see clips of the film in the days before VCR`s!
Edited to add,i can`t remember if i saw it at Wolverhampton`s ABC(Now a nightclub) or Odeon(Now a bingo hall)
