I find this doubly tragic - if doubly tragic can be such a thing - given that Mr Perine never drank alcohol, smoked or took drugs. It seems almost incomprehensible that a person could lead a healthy life, but still be diagnosed with lung cancer.
My grandfather drank a lot of whisky and smoked Rizla roll-up cigarettes. Thankfully, he never got lung cancer, but he died in his sleep at the age of 84. I'm glad he never got that horrible disease, but from a logical perspective - he smoked like a chimney - I am surprised he didn't get anything like that.
I guess life comes without guarantees, eh. I remember one of Mr Perine's editorials in M&F, where he appeared upbeat about beating lung cancer.
I spoke to Mr Perine twice via social media (thanking him for an interview his magazine did with Lee Majors, and acknowledging a tweet of his). He was affable and chatty on both occasions. He seemed so down-to-earth whenever he interacted via social media; and whenever I read his M&F editorials, they were always so engaging, non-pretentious and spoke directly to readers' concerns and desires.
It won't feel the same picking up the magazine without seeing an editorial of his. My condolences are with his family.
