Just spend a few pleasant minutes revisiting his work on Google. One of those artists who makes me regret every line I every put on paper. Astonishing.

There are plenty of his works here in Boston. Every time I visit the Gardner Museum or the Museum of Fine Arts or even look at the enormous mural sequence he created for the Boston Public Library, it's hard to move away from one JSS and move on to the next.
Have you seen "Madame X" as Sargent originally painted it? As beautiful as it is in its final state, the original is even more harmonious. And all he did was adjust a shoulder strap (to address some of the outrage that the painting initially created)! Yet more evidence of how every tiny element is important, in work of the highest caliber.

Fumée d'Ambre Gris is at the Clark Museum in the Berkshires. Living in the south now I so mis New England's museums.

Every CG artist working today should study how much life and personality he could bring to the eyes of a figure in even the most casual of expressions.
And his grasp of what makes light beautiful...*shudder*

Like Andy, I used to see his work all over Boston when I lived there. Seeing his work at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Gardner Museum was a great way to be introduced to his work.
My favorite hangs in the unique and overwhelming Gardner Museum - it’s called “El Jaleo”

Some of his pieces can be seen at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the pre 1950 American art dept. for any of you midwesterners out there.

The man could do so much with one brush stroke!
Amazon's Kindle store has a number of collections that are pretty
cheap that have a lot of painting in them. Not bad if you have one of
the bigger Kindle's (or I assume a decent sized iPad). The Cezanne
collections for sale there are pretty good, too.

Worth mentioning that El Jaleo is huge, covers a whole wall (okay, it's a relatively small wall) at the Gardner . . .
