I don't know if I've become overly picky about movies but this is yet another piece of drek. And my dislike of the movie has nothing to do with a fondness or even familiarity of the source material.

The writing is just so bad that it makes for a bad movie. The protagonist is unlikable and unsympathetic. His character is inconsistent and motivations are confusing/contradictory. The other characters are so generic and one-dimensional as to be unbelievable and their actions are so unrealistic that you never believe or feel for any of them.
The story itself is disjointed and fragmented and worst of all, the whole reason anyone wants to see this movie is not on-screen very much. They also do one of my biggest pet peeves and set up rules and then break them.
They even wimped out on Venom. I thought the whole point of this movie was to be hard core and make Venom a truly scary character? Instead, they water him down and don't give the audience what they want. Not onscreen anyway.
For anyone who saw it, shouldn't the annoying neighbor have been used to establish just how ruthless and uncaring Venom is? He was a meaningless character that seemed to be perfect to help establish Venom. But he just gets the equivalent of "boo".
Brock is a mixed bag too. On the one hand, he's an investigative journalist who isn't afraid of his boss or high powered people and he isn't afraid to speak his mind to them to the extent that his willing to risk his job, relationship and the city he lives in on that attitude. But then he's afraid to tell his neighbor off for playing his guitar too loudly.
It's just a mess and I'll be curious to see how it holds up. I know the first weekend excitement carried it to a big opening box office but I can't help but think that it will drop off.
