Well, Tom Hardy makes a better Eddie Brock than Topher Grace.

This is like doing a Bizarro movie without introducing him in a Superman movie.

••

This looks like one that is SO far from the character it might almost be worth a look.

Or not.

If Spider-man is not in the movie, how does Venom end up
looking like the black Spider-man costume?

What exactly was ‘Venom’ about that trailer?

It could have been about any one of dozens of generic movies that have nothing to do with the character.

If you had not told me the title of that trailer, and there had been no words in that trailer, I would have assumed "generic medical thriller" rather than a Venom movie.

I may be missing something here, but Venom is at Sony, right? And Spider-Man, and his assorted characters, are now at Marvel Studios? So Sony would have to do a deal to have Spider-Man battle Venom on the big screen, right?

Is this Venom taking place in the same continuity as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING? Is it part of the wider MCU?

If not, one has to wonder what the point of a VENOM franchise that doesn't feature Spider-Man.

Robbie,i think Spider-man is still at Sony, just being
used under license by Marvel/Disney.

The teaser doesn't really tell us much.

It would be interesting if Venom took over as the flagship character of the Sony superhero movies. His rogue's gallery would be the villains Marvel Studios may not want want to revisit (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, Rhino, etc.)

Almost.

Take this with a grain of salt, but there have been some online rumors that Tom Holland has a cameo as Peter Parker.

Tom Holland? The director of CHILD'S PLAY? The writer of PSYCHO II? Hmmm, most interesting. ;-))

This is perhaps the worse teaser of a super hero flick, ever. Worse than the New Mutants teaser. At least some of you die harder fans understood where the New Mutants teaser was coming from.

I think Tom Hardy had does all-quality work so I assume this movie will be far more interesting than this horrible teaser conveys.

New Trailer

Much better than the first trailer, and I really like how they are handling Venom’s internal voice. I’ve gone from not at all interested to wait-and-see. Still skeptical of a Venom uncoupled from Spider-Man’s black costume, but maybe they’ll sneak in a quick encounter between the symbiote and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Jenny Slate’s pronunciation of “symbiote” is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Better trailer than the first to be sure, but I still have zero interest in seeing this movie.  I get the vibe that it's Sony's take on the Hulk mythos which, in turn, was taken from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  It's just not that interesting or compelling to me at all.  Venom has never been one of my favorite characters.  Far from it.  Just not interested in seeing a feature length film about him.

Seems like a mildly interesting extrapolation of some facets of the character. A core characteristic is a hatred of Spider-Man, however, which doesn't appear to be part of the deal here. And if you leave out of the core of a character in an adaptation, it seems a bit pointless.

So, is Tom Hardy playing Eddie Brock as a little slow, or is that how British people think Americans sound when they talk?

And those are the only two options?

I think it's more likely he's acting an individual behaviour than attempting to represent an entire nation in one performance. To me it sounds like he's doing some kind of blue-collar Queen's accent.

To me, and my wife independently had the same reaction, he sounded less like working class Queens, and more like Forrest Gump.  People in the northeast don't speak that slowly, for one.

I was a young teen when Secret Wars, the black costume, and the birth of Venom happened. At the time, I though he was a great, scary villain.

Then he blew up and became an anti-hero and "symbiote" became the new cool

I've gone on to pretty much hating Venom, much like I do characters like the Red Hulk and Harley Quinn.

However, I watched that trailer and spent the rest of the evening muttering "we are Venom" in my best growly voice, much to the chagrin of my poor wife. She did describe the trailer as, and I quote, "fairly horrific."

My curiosity is piqued, but this is definitely just an at-home rental.
