Update on the Omnibus:

The first thought, since this is going to contain only 8 issues, was to simply do the first 8. But then I got to thinking about how my skills showed definite improvement, issue to issue, and I didn't want to have to go all George Lucas on those early ones.

So, instead, we're thinking about doing the middle 8 first, starting with issue 9. If this goes over, and there is a demand for more, we'll do the first and the last 8 later. Currently, the plan is to include the Gorn story in the "middle" volumn.

(This is possible because each issue is a one-off.)

Thanks for the Omnibus update , JB.

Hopefully all the issues will see the Omnibus treatment, demand permitting, but I for one can`t wait to grab the first volume! Big fan of New Visions. Something to look forward to, in the second half of 2018!

Now if only I could get to the USA, so I could ask you and Mr. Shatner to sign a copy for me....drool :) :)

A small dark cloud: Shatner was amenable to writing an introduction, but it turned out his contractual obligations elsewhere made doing so impossible.

A legitimate consideration, but still a bummer.

John, so if I understand this correctly the first ("middle") omnibus will contain the following issues:

09. "The Hollow Man"
10. "Mister Chekov"
11. "Of Woman Born"
12. "Swarm"
XY. "More of the Serpent Than the Dove" (Humble Bundle 2016)
13. "The Hidden Face"
14. "Sam"
15. "The Traveler"
16. "Time Out of Joint"

Is this going to be sold at the convention only, or will it be available to everyone afterwards as well via regular channels?

Also, any exclusive content in there? Any retouching of the existing?

If the other Omnibus volumes are published later, perhaps his schedule will permit him to do an introduction for the "first" volume of issues!

It's not time that's the issue. He has contractual obligations that make him exclusive elsewhere. I can respect that.

He could steal a page from the Byrne book and write a brief intro, have it made into a stamp, and stamp it inside each omnibus he autographs at the events. :)

Realizing just now that the "middle 8" contain at least 5 of the issues I would have chosen had we ended up going with a non-chronological collection.

I'll leave it to your imaginations which 5 those would be.

I’m just glad the collection has “Mister Chekov” and “Swarm” - I can’t think of two better stories to introduce the series to a new reader.  “Mister Chekov” adds an amazing dimension to the character while not disrupting anything the series has established.  And “Swarm” is just such a kick ass story that has a lot of great moments on the bridge - I admit I have a soft spot for stories that are centered on the bridge!  The design of that alien ship is so damn cool.  It’s a true JB design folded into the Star Trek universe - sweet!

But probably the most essential story for a collection done in conjunction with a William Shatner appearance is “Sam”- this is such a great use of William Shatner’s work along with the artistry that JB brings to the series.  To use images of Shatner to create two characters in one story is so cool - it speaks to a kind of collaboration between JB and Shatner that makes this series unique.   And of course this story will resonate with TOS fans who are coming to the series for the first time.  It gives an emotionally resonate aspect to Kirk that makes me see the character in a different way, which I think is the key to this series’ creative impact. Before NEW VISIONS, only the episodes from series had given me moments that truly define the characters.  This series has taken the characters deeper.  When does a modern work do that?  Not often, and yet NEW VISIONS did it on a regular basis.   Both “Sam” and “Mister Chekov” changed my view of the characters in a significant way.

My one request for the printed version of this omnibus is that IDW have a comprehensive print check before the final print run.  Comparing the digital version of some of the stories to the printed version shows that the printed version sometimes prints too dark.  This is a great chance to let this work shine, IDW!

I’m trying to figure out a way to get to Boston for the convention - I so do not want to miss this!!

Occurs to me that I should emphasize that my ten autograph maximum is exactly that, autographs. Not books. So no showing up with ten copies of OHOTMU looking for me to sign everything I did in each.

(Yes, some have tried that ruse!)

Really trying to make Boston work.

It seems Mr. Shatner will only appear Sunday. Will you be there all 3 days, JB?

Do you charge for autographs? Or just limit them to 10 per person/family?

I'd imagine those lines will be pretty long. Any chance there will be a JB VIP package or the like?

Of those questions, the only one I can a present answer is that I don't charge for my autograph.

FanExpo T.O. sent me an email regarding 'fan experience' packages that you can purchase.
Example: for around $700 you can attend an exclusive panel with A. Kubert, get a selfie and 5 autographs, and a head sketch of your choice of character.

The JB and WS packages are posted as 'Stay Tuned' or coming soon.

I love William Shatner as much as anyone, but I'm going there for JB.
I hope to Crom that I don't have to pay just to see any panels or whatever.
I will If I have to, but ouch.

My LCS displays flyers for upcoming local events at the front checkout counter, specifically shows where they are set up as vendors. Toyshows, comic cons and Fanexpo is no different.
So today I grabbed the new tri-fold FanExpo ad outlining the guest list and at the top of the comic section: John Byrne Legend, Guest of Honour.

Yep, I'll be hanging on to this little keepsake.

I don't think they give you a fancy hat to wear, but perhaps a sash? :D

Seriously, I'm not surprized they recognize your stature in their advertising. I'd be perplexed if they didn't.

As old timers here know, I never cease to be amazed that I am who I am. In my mind I will always be that punk kid still trying to figure out how to do it.

It surprises me when I realize I have left such a mark. Or is that stain?

It is a mark of great distinction.   You set some high water marks in multiple titles.
