Bond "needed" a reboot for the dimmer bulbs in the audience who would insist it all takes place in real time.

I was baffled by Bond's need to reboot. At that point, the movie franchise had been around 40+ years.

Also, and I appreciate this may well make me pedantic/anal, but it fucked up the timeline slightly. If Judi Dench's M was there at the beginning of 007's career, then how, in GOLDENEYE, could she be Bond's 'new boss', calling him a "relic of the Cold War"?

Goes to the theory that James Bond is as much of a code-name as 007 is. Meaning that Craig's Bond is not the same character as Brosnan's Bond.

Eithet that, or they royally screwed up by not replacing her when they replaced Brosnan....

The idea of "James Bond" being a "code name" has its genesis in the "comedy" version of CASINO ROYALE, about which the less said the better.

With any serial characters -- Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, Dracula, etc -- the audience should remember these are all FICTIONAL, and not intended to be viewed as a single, unbroken tapestry.
