So, judging by the lack of thread for this film, there isn't much interest. But, in case there is, my Son and I went to see it yesterday. It's not going to win any awards for story, but for a two hour popcorn film, it was a hell of a lot of fun. If I have a complaint, it's that there are plenty of places to explore characters and they get left on the table in favor of a fast paced action flick. It still works, but an extra 10 to 15 minutes could have help with character development. That said, it's a fun ride.

I want to see it, but I don't know if I'll make time to do so during its theatrical run. I quite enjoyed the first film which was a domestic dud but an international hit. The sequel looks to be following the same trajectory. While it opened at #1 domestically with $28 mil, that's down $9 mil from the original (not adjusted for inflation). However, it's already grossed $122.5 mil international (up nearly $70 mil vs the original) against a $150 mil budget. Classic case of a film made for an international audience.

My adult brain thought the first one was kind of dopey. But my inner 12 year old boy rejoiced at watching giant robots fight giant monsters, and thought it was the best thing ever. Sound like the sequel hits the same notes.

This one is a little dopier. My 8 yr old loved it. He's kind of showed me the way to enjoy these. Don't go in looking for the art of cinema. Just enjoy the goofy ride of giant robots and giant monsters and have fun. This one feels more like a Japanese film than the first one.

I really liked the first one, not sure I want to see an Idris Elba-less sequel.
If I change my mind, I'll probably catch it at the cheap theater.

I plan on watching this one on the big screen. I have very low expectations for story and character development, but seeing giant robots and monsters beat the hell out of each other is hard to pass up. And we finally get daytime fights! The first movie avoided a natural light, daytime battle for some reason, but my favorite shot is the daytime clip of the Kaiju taking out the wall in Australia.

...And a child shall lead them. ;-)
Sometimes it's OK to have goofy fun for its own sake.

Saw this over the weekend and found it entertaining. Compared to the first movie, this felt more like Independence Day Resurgence crossed with the 2017 Power Rangers movie, but it was goofy fun.
I did LOL at a pair of back-to-back Mobile Suit Gundam Easter Eggs, one very obvious, the other not so.

Sometimes on Saturday afternoon you just want to watch a movie with giant robots fighting giant monsters. I did and I did.

I loved it.
It’s a multinational cast (which was awesome) and I didn’t perfectly understand every single thing every actor said. I certainly didn’t understand everything the actors said while running and diving from a slew of guided missle debris. But you damn well can believe I understood a flaming chainsaw the size of an industrial crane carving through a fully occupied office building. I speak that language fluently. And I understood one giant robot horsewhipping the shit out of another with a pile of traffic. I understand those things like a newborn understands its mama's milk. And I understood them in IMAX, with my 10-year old son equally enjoying every single frame.
There are some issues. Mako Mori, the original film’s brightest light, gets the short shrift here. Scott Eastwood is passable at best. But you know what? A giant robot bludgeons a Kaiju with a plasma-charged morningstar. So I can live with the flaws, because when I was a kid I didn’t wake up early mornings to watch ULTRAMAN for the tender human drama.
I unabashedly give it four gigantic spinning electrically charged stars, each ripping through a different building in a different city until they finally converge into one giant star in space, opening a wormhole to another universe which sucks up every stick-up-their-ass critic who wrote some weaksauce review.

If I didn't already want to see the movie, that would have done it.

My son has asked me to beg the forum to get everybody to see the movie. He desperately wants the third one.
If you have thoughts of seeing it. Go see it in IMAX. 3D optional but IMAX really makes a giant robot movie better.

I seen it with my son.
And like the first one it was unadulterated action. Exactly what we wanted. No less than 4 big fights. And yes Stephen, IMAX is the way to go, 2D for me, with recliners of course. Tell your son not to worry, a third installment should be a no brainer.

I saw it and found it to be a very enjoyable sequel. Big fights well done and in bright daylight. Some enjoyable new ideas, and a clever follow-up of the first movie. Starship Troopers 2 it ain't ! On the record, I often dislike "clever kids" but the character of Amara was amazingly well written in my opinion. (the russian girl acted very well too). I suspect Scott Eastwood was trying too much sometimes to mimic his dad.

This is how I approached the first PACIFIC RIM. And it was good fun. I'll likely end up checking out the sequel at some point.

I really love the original Pacific Rim, but it is Del Toro!!! Going by the commercial for this sequel the Kaiju are back thus undoing the great victory of the first one, and it's effects look kind of half price where they were sensational on the first. But, the big deal breaker for me is no Ron Perlman!?! I'll never know if he gets his shoe back... so I'm really thinking this is going to be a permanent 'doesn't exist for me' pass, sorry, but the BF will probably buy the blu-ray whenever that comes out. He buys stuff I frown somewhat disapprovingly at like that, such as a remake of the Magnificent Seven or the Peter Jackson King Kong (but not the Will Ferrell Land Of The Lost thankfully). But then I got him back by buying four Happy Tree Friends DVDs (those things really are deeply wrong, I know).

I saw PR2 last night and while I liked it....it really lacked the atmosphere of the original. It’s as though the criticism of the first movie being dark and rainy forced this one into an overload of screaming daylight. And the result was a feeling of more ‘Power Rangers’ than ‘Pacific Rim’.
This one really needed DelToro.
