The Talking Heads is an influencial, respected band by many. I don't think the singer has a good voice. But it works. There are other bands that have strange lead singers (like the guy from B52s) but the band works. (There are other examples, everyone has one of those types of bands in their playlists).
What about comic book artists? Are there any unconventional artists that aren't considered classically beautiful but their style works? For me, I think Frank Miller has some of the "ugliest" art out there, and yet somehow it works (I love Frank Miller). I really enjoyed DKIII but more than once I turned the page and was happily surprised it got published. Any others?

Bill Sienkiewicz is the first name that comes to mind.

Ditto on Sienkiewicz. Many other "unconventional" comic artists are just so dang much work to read the story. I never felt that with his stuff.

I would say Jack Kirby fits the bill.

Michael Golden.
When I first saw him on a Batman story, I thought "What's this?!" Then I saw him do Man-Bat and Bat-Mite, and then I got it. MICRONAUTS blew me away.

Dave McKeanAnyway, I often find that certain "unconventional artists" work well in a very specific context (a certain character, a specific story or series) but wouldn't work in others.

Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz, i`d take them anyday over the current crop of cartoony and manga inspired artists Marvel are currently using.
