It's been about a month since I finished my final (for now) issue of NEW VISIONS, and thus entered the ranks of the unemployed.

Not "retired," mind you! That just sounds OLD, and, by labeling myself "unemployed" I ward off the bleats of "But I thought you said..." when/if I find something to do.

It's been an odd four weeks. I haven't been doing anything to "keep myself busy." Mostly I just sit around all day, sometimes reading, sometimes tinkering on the piano. I keep up my usual routine of showering, dressing and going out for lunch, so I won't turn into that old guy shuffling around in his bathrobe. I've even poked at a few ideas that have been bubbling in the pot. But none of them seem to want to be born yet.

Thing is, if you'd asked me a few years back how I would feel about this do-nothing cycle, I'd've been horrified. "I'd go out of my mind!" Yet I have not. Well, no more than usual. I feel quite content racking up the empty days.

Who'da thunk?

Wow... four weeks and you haven't gone nuts?? Fantastic... you've earned some R&R - but may I hope (selfishly) that some of those ideas flourish quickly into new projects??

I hate the idea of having seen my last John Byrne series.

-C!

*Miss seeing the commissions too! :)

So does Jim Warden!

Sadly, the commissions seem to have slipped under a different kind of malaise. Time was, I said I enjoyed doing them because they were the only way I had to access what I still insist are the real characters.

Now that thought just makes me sad.

The demand is certainly still there for you to make convention appearances. But I recall you firmly saying never again. :(

I've been to too many cons where I have seen older pros facing a wall of nothing while the fans (read: speculators) beseige the latest flavor of the month. I do NOT want to become That Old Guy!

Mr Byrne, I hope your days continue to be fruitful.

I am glad you are going out for lunch. Although my reasons for going out to lunch in no way equate to the situation described in your initial post, it is a highlight for me, both the looking forward to it and the lunch itself.

Just curious if there’s been any leisurely drawing going on? Sketchbook doodling? Taking time off from drawing might eventually produce interesting results.

I say enjoy the well deserved break. Someday there will be another panel to be drawn or page to be written or, perhaps, clay to be sculpted. Until then, enjoy the vacation time!

Any chance you might return to the autobiography you started? It sounds like you had a good start to it...

I wrote 400 pages, which got me about as far as WONDER WOMAN. Some
friends have read it, but I have not seriously shopped it around.

Perhaps I can stay away long enough to become "that new guy, Byrne."

Have you ever considered doing one of your large size "commissions" as a gift to yourself. With no restrictions on which characters (existing or new creation) or settings, it may be interesting to see what emerges on the paper.
