I recall Chris doing stories way back when that showed Kitty could only phase for as long as she could hold her breath...or at least she believed as much.

I think there was an example where she phased through some molten lava and was thinking how close she came to dying because she almost couldn't hold her breath long enough to get clear.

I'm not sure being boiled alive wouldn't be a greater concern in a scenario like that!!

Anyway, thanks. I'll keep this in mind.

He did have Kitty holding her breath as she went through a lava flow as I recall.

Great look on Kitty's face in that first panel when she is squished into the tunnel. And the story has taken an unexpected twist!

Maybe as Kitty's abilities matured, she realized that needing to breathe when phased was psychosomatic?

Still puts me on the wrong side, timewise.

Kitty's dilemma, represented in those panels, reminds me of Len Wein's disgruntlement when Chris brought "science" to an early scene with Nightcrawler. Falling from a great height, Cyclops orders Kurt to teleport to the ground. Len's intent was that our Mr Wagner say it was too far. Chris wrote something about temperature changes in altitude or somesuch.*

Len was so peeved he actually wrote a Nightcrawler appearance into AMAZING SPIDER-MAN so he could contradict Chris. Ah, the days of writer/editors!

This is something I'm trying NOT to do here!

* A perfectly calm conversations while the team is falling from an exploded aircraft.

Yeah that old Kitty-in-Lava sequence doesn't make sense. IMO, you are either partially phased and still affected by molecules, including the heat of the lava and the need to breathe. Or you are fully phased and not affected by anything in our physical world.

And....OMG.....was that her costume!!!! With roller skates too? Was this her teenage angst, rebellious, non-conformity stage?

JB, whats your take on Nightcrawler's teleport ability? Can he nullify his velocity by teleporting?

The joke with the roller skates (I use the word joke lightly here) was that Kitty was a terrible costume designer. She went through a series of successively worse costumes.

This was one of them
