Yeah, you're right. I think I was afraid of losing too much of the eye and then lost the pencil line when it was surrounded by the black ink. And forgot the context that Wolverine was looking off to the distance.

That shot of the StratoJet is unsatisfying enough that I've decided to throw together a quick model I can trace into the panel. Just to get the proper proportions.

Results tomorrow, most likely.

Thaaaat's more like it! (Tho I seem to have rendered this model with the wingtips in "invisible" mode. Oops! Did that while working on the nacelles, forgot to "turn them on" again! Fixed on the page.)

And here's a peek at the (very simple) model...

And Dave's version...

As I have mentioned before, the model I built for HIDDEN YEARS, which was much more detailed, had the X-MEN emblem on the tail, just as Dave had drawn it. This was blacked out on the order of the X-Editor, without consulting with me. "The X-Men wouldn't do that," was the excuse when I saw the printed issue and complained. This was, then, yet another example of them changing something and making it WRONG.

(And this is the potential nightmare I would be facing once again if X-MEW became a real series.)

where are your 40.000 byrne addicts, who would allow great comics to live ?

••

As noted before, their numbers have shrunk along with the rest of the marketplace.

Do you think Dave Cockrum worked from a model, JB?

With the wingtips visible. (Am I certifiable to be doing all this for a book that doesn't really exist??)

(Even with such a simple model, it becomes kinda obvious this vehicle is in no way a "modified" SR-71!)

That I do not know. Dave and colorist Andy Yanchus were both avid modelers. But I don't know if Dave had built any X-Men specific custom jobs.

JB, what do you use to erase your penciled artwork each time you
make a change? That paper sure is holding up well!

I use a good, ol' fashioned Pink Pearl eraser. The trick is to erase in broad, soft strokes, instead of bearing down on the paper.

+++++++++

This is one of the best typos ever. X-MEW: The book starring mutant superhero kittens!

Anyway, I’m digging the strato-jet model. And I’m definitely thinking that the Blackbird became an X-Men thing because someone misinterpreted some strato-jet art, at some point.

Best non-comic ever!
