Since the published 138 was the "funeral issue", do pencils exist of the original transition panels other than the splash page with Scott and Jean by the pond and the ending with them leaving in the car and sad Logan?  Or were those two pages the only ones you created before the issue changed?

Between the initial splash page and the ending page, there are only a few changed panels. Basically, they are the panels where we see Scott at the funeral remembering the X-Men's story.

Ok, attempt number 3. I had fun inking Nightcrawler in this one. I have a question though about the character. When I was looking up reference material on him  I came across the Dave Cockrum model sheet and I was wondering about the blue skin. Is it actual blue skin like they portrayed it in the films or is it very fine dark blue fur?

That's too bad.  I've always thought the splash page for 138 was a brilliant piece of art on your part.  You can see Scott's lingering concern and Jean's relief (either as someone relieved of her powers or someone with the mind of a 5 year old).  The contrast of this single page and the drama of the issues that proceed it is so striking and so skillfully and simply accomplished by you

Mr. Byrne,

On the topic of scripting, were you ever given an opportunity by Claremont to review his word balloons or narrative boxes before the book went to press?

I believe you've discussed in the past how he would script situations differently than you had intended in your plots, and that was one of the reasons you were unhappy on the book.

I ask this because I noticed a big difference in Claremont's scripting after you left — and I don't mean story direction, but how characters talked, acted, etc.

This led me to think you may have had more influence over what went into those word balloons, than I originally thought.

Tony M, perhaps his nickname of Fuzzy Elf partly answers your question.

I think it’s both.

Toward the end, Shooter offered me script approval, but honestly that didn't seem like part of my job.

I vote for captions and thought balloons. I miss them.
