It's kind of weird that Abrams's first film (MI III) is still his most daring and satisfying. Maybe because the MI series is built on the kind of random narrative leaps and ticking-clock action pieces that he clearly is drawn to and excels at?

What especially helped with MI-III is that he remembered that the Mission Impossible series was basically mini-heist films with a team of specialists. The first two Mission Impossible movies (and the most recent one) wanted it to be THE FUGITIVE with Tom Cruise on the run. And he already had that formula down with ALIAS.

Disney isn't even being consistent with their own Star Wars canon anymore. I feel dumb for having invested so much time and money in all of the new novels, comics, and video games, which actually were a consistent and solid meta-story until The Last Jedi, where things went seriously awry.

Late to the party, but of course I cannot let this statement slip by without pointing out that STAR WARS ran off the rails with EMPIRE, the first sequel to begin the tearing down process.
