Side thought on names. There's often a tendency for writers ( especially those who didn't create the character) to give characters the more "elaborate" version of a name. Dick, Mike, Pete, John, Steve and Matt ( to name a few) are legitimate names on their own. But they often get "expanded" into Richard, Michael, Steven or Stephen... well you get the idea.

I can say that, as a "Rick" in family, I prefer to be called Eric. Except by my family... and most of them don't care any more and call me Eric anyhow.

There was one quirky acquaintance of mine who called me Richard... but I told him he was a weirdo anyhow.

I hate to further ruin everyone's day, but years ago they added to his origin so that 'Gray Son' is not his actual last name, but a title.  Because he was the chosen of a death cult, intended to be trained from birth to be their assassin.  But his parents were killed and he got warded out to Bruce Wayne, so they never got a chance to complete his training.

I'm not kidding.  This 'Dick' thing is the least of the problems with his name now.

Steve, that is an intensely depressing development. Remember back when writers could actually write and editors would actually edit? Good times, good times...

Steve -- when was this added? What year, what issue? Never heard about it.

I have always thought Nightwing's parents were circus artists called the Flying Graysons! So it seems a very illogical thing because this fact has been used in lots of stories as Batman Year Three among others.

That thing of the Gray Son, could it be something related to the Court of Owls story? I don't remember exactly the story but it seems what you are talking about.

Yeah, as I recall Dick was being groomed to be a Talon or something.
