I guess Disney+ is my chance to see this - I've only been putting it off for forty
years!

It all looks interesting with some cool visuals, and when I see those droids it all
falls apart and I lose interest.

Interesting. By droids do you mean VINCENT and Old BOB?

I've not seen it - there's more than the two floating droids?

On a positive note - I've been able to avoid spoilers for forty years!

Tim, THE BLACK HOLE has a few nifty-looking robot characters and the two cute ones are not nearly as off-putting as they might appear. Your ability to tolerate the countrified vocals of Slim Pickens as Old B.O.B. will be a factor in your making that determination for yourself. Roddy McDowell as V.I.N. Cent on the other hand is quite charming. The main villain's enforcer Maximillian is impressively menacing and the robot sentries are well-designed as well.

The overall production design is excellent and I find the effects to be surprisingly good given the era in which they were done. I think it's worth seeing just to look at.

Yes, Tim, as Brian says, there's all sort of robots in
it. For me, the film has all sorts of flaws, but VINCENT,
BOB and Maximillian have always been some of the
strongest parts of the film. We also have the robot
sentries and Captain STAR and other thingy-me-bobs that I
won't go into for fear of spoiling anything.

The film has wonderful production values, a dramatic John
Barry score, an eerie air of mystery... And a godawful
ending for a kid's movie.

Out of all the characters, VINCENT is genuinely the best,
with Maximillian in second place. Schell's Reinhardt/Nemo
is intriguing, Perkins' idiosyncratically twitchy Dr
Durant and Borgnine's pugnacious Mr Booth are also good
to watch, but Robert Forster is totally wasted in this
movie as the bland Captain Holland.

It's worth watching, I'd say, just keep your expectations
low... And watch out for that ending!
