Gateway Comics. As evident by today's comic book sales not enough are being made. It's of my opinion that too many of the comic books being made today, especially from the Big Two are being made for the aged "Fan Boy/Man" audience.

One of the first comic books I read as a child was Detective Comics 395.
The Secret of the Waiting Graves. A stand alone Batman tale by Denny O'Neil & Neil Adams.I was instantly hooked.Thou it wasn't until the 80's that I became a hardcore fan. The Marvel resurgence in the early 80's helped.I lasted as a fan until 1989.

What was your Gateway Comic(s)?

For me it was the Transformers. My diehard dedication to all things Robots In Disguise led me to fervently getting each issue, which in turn led to me reading other Marvel Comics.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 229. Spider-Man vs Juggernaut. By Stern/Romita Jr. Part one of a two-parter. It took me 30 years to get 230 but I bet I read 229 a thousand times by that point. Hands down my favorite single comic ever.

My older brother had a big collection so I was aware of comics but when I saw the G.I. Joe cartoon advertising the first issue, I had to buy it! That issue started my hobby.

My gateway was Justice League of America. Both a number of borrowed issues from the next door neighbor and the occasional feature on "The New Adventures of Superman."

Mine was All-Star Comics 58. I had bought a few comics here and there but nothing really grabbed me- my first comic ever was a Captain America which had something to do with him in the snow back around 1971 or 72.

There was something about the, to my mind, wierd versions of Hawkman, Green Latern and the Flash that lived on Earth 2(?!) that caught my attention and fascinated me so much that I never looked back. Even as a little kid the Wally Wood artwork knocked me out!  My first favorite artists were the Giffen and Wood team - with the Joe Staton/Bob Layton team that followed Wood on All-Star being the first art team that I actively looked for.

Of course, if the DC editors that pushed for Crisis on Infinite Earths in the '80's are to be believed, All-Star Comics 58 should have 'confused' me so much that I would have never come back for more. They were so wrong! What I saw as weirdness of the JSA was a big part of what kept bringing me back!

Hulk #296; I remember seeing it at our local grocery store and was reminded of the Hulk TV show two-parter "The First".  My mother had to buy three different copies, as I kept coloring torn purple pants on the Hulk's legs...and basic wear and tear that an 8 year old will put on a comic.  I didn't buy another comic until Hulk #321 and went full-time collecting.

My "gateway" comic was the I have no idea what number it was issue of BATMAN FAMILY (circa early 1970's) - it was the first comic book that my mom ever purchased for me.  I noticed it in the check-out line at the grocery store when I was probably 5 years old and asked if I could have it, and she obliged.  I could read at 5, though I was far more fascinated by the pictures, of course.  Needless to say, I was hooked!
