Just watched the whole first season of AMC's The Terror. Really fantastic show starring Jared Harris (Chernobyl, Mad Men) and HBO's Rome's Caesar and Brutus (Ciarian Hinds and Tobias Menzies). Fantastic acting and really high production values. It's a good blend of historical and horror fantasy elements. Highly recommended to anyone that hasn't watched it. I saw they were doing a second season and wondered how since I thought The Terror was just a 10 episode mini-series, but I read where it's a different story and cast, as the show is going to be an anthology.

Watched this series as it aired and loved it. Really looking forward to what they do for the second season.

The book it's based on is fantastic, I still haven't sat down and watched the show, though.

The upcoming second season is a horror story set in a Japanese internment camp during the second world war and the cast features George Takei, so it could be interesting.

I saw the series first and liked it, then read the book and found it (unsurprisingly) superior to the show. The book was very long but hard to put down.
The supernatural elements may not be to everyone's taste but the minutiae of the daily life of a crew of an arctic expedition at that time was truly fascinating to me.

I think the show would have worked without the supernatural elements, but they do add a level of even more tension and suspense to an already insane survival story.

Since no-one knew what happened to that doomed exploration, it's open to interpretation. I thought it a brilliant idea to divorce itself from that which we don't actually know to come up with a theory that, while radical, still made for a compelling story. I loved it.

I agree completely, Matt. I also like how they talk about how the very real lead poisoning they all suffered from causes hallucinations given further credence to everything that happens on the show. And also how the show encompasses multiple genres so deftly. Such a great show in every aspect from cinematography to direction to writing to acting. They could not have had a better cast of actors. Guys like Cirian Hinds and Jarred Harris elevate almost everything they are in to another level.

I haven’t watched the first season, but the internment camp setting and George Takei’s involvement have me interested in Season 2. Is the link between the seasons just thematic? Can I revisit Season 1 later, or will I be missing elements if I don’t watch the previous season?

My understanding it that it's going to be an anthology show with each season telling a different story under the blanket title of "The Terror".
