I take a tremendous delight in movies that have special appearances in them, and twice as much when it's a surprise appearance. For example, Charlton Heston in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" or Sean Connery in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", or Stan Lee's in the MCU and Sony and Fox flicks (for the not-so-surprising cameos.)

What are yours?

Just to narrow my list, I'll mention a few favorite cameos by directors in their own movies (NB, too many Hitchcock to name):

The 1960 Marilyn Monroe movie Let's Make Love has several fun cameos, but for some reason I really enjoyed the appearance of Bing Crosby in it (At the 40 second mark in this video).

Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise showing up in the 21 Jumpstreet movie caught me completely off guard

Christian Slater in Star Trek 6 gets me every time word is he framed his paycheck instead of cashing it.

I loved when Sinatra showed up in one of the 'Cannonball Run' movies. (But I forget which of those movies is which at this point.)

Wes Craven's cameo as a janitor (dressed like his creation Freddy Krueger) in the first "Scream" was fun too.

I enjoyed the various cameos in 2015's The Big Short (which include Margot Robie, Selena Gomez and the late Anthony Bourdain).

Spielberg in the Blues Brothers was also fun.

Now, Spielberg doesn't have much acting chops, but I'm usually impressed by the acting ability of directors. For instance, John Huston turned out to be a marvellous actor and Pollack was brilliant in Tootsie (mentioned upthread).

Last night I was watching Moneyball (2011) for the third time and Spike Jonze has a brilliantly excruciating role as the husband of Billy Bean's ex. He just kind of revels in the little nuances and it's totally ego-less in terms of being quite happy to play a role designed to be sneered at by the audience.

I suppose directors are ready and willing to play more character-actor type parts, which are usually enjoyable.

Moneyball has quite a few guest roles, including Joe Satriani playing the Star Spangled Anthem before a ball game.
