If you're a Republican Senator, wouldn't you rather go into the 2020 election with Mike Pence as your candidate? I think Pence would still get all the Republican base voters, and would have a better chance of attracting some mid ground voters than Trump.

Peter H. - were I a republican senator, and I decided to run for president, I would distance myself from Donald Trump as far as possible without actually stating that literally. The sheeple will follow their master's legacy, and those who have a thought in their heads don't want any association to 45 - or so I believe.

I’m waiting to learn Mitch “Chinless and Spineless” McConnell can block this coming before the Senate, as he has with BIPARTISAN gun legislation.
*******
I heard on NPR last night that the Senate can simply refuse to try the case. Much like they did with Garland’s confirmation hearing.

Here's a pretty good article from January by Bob Bauer, White House Counsel to President Obama, about if the Senate can decline to try an impeachment case.

Yes, the Senate could decide not to try the case. That would be foolish however, because it would leave the charges open and the public infuriated. So much easier to simply hold a quick “trial“ and exonerate the president. The alternative to not hold the trial would also leave the articles open for the next Senate, which might not be Republican dominated.

I can’t believe Trump actually released the call. Is he so stupid that he can’t see what’s plain as day?

I honestly think he doesn't understand the law. Based on comments, I think he believed that they were accusing him of asking Ukraine to meddle in the election or give him campaign contributions.
He clearly thinks this kind of deal-making is perfectly acceptable, given that he called Pelosi yesterday and tried to make a deal with her to make this all go away.

Oh, Steve Trump clearly doesn't understand the law. He once said something along the lines of pardoning himself if ever brought up on charges!
a. Pardoning himself would be admitting guilt. b. He can't pardon himself to begin with.
I am sure the Republicans will find a way to put a stop to this. And if they do, I'm all for the Democrats putting a stop to Trump and the Republicans (ie, telling them good luck getting anything passed).

Holy shit, guys. The Republicans may just hold out hope for us. The Senate has voted 54-41 to terminate Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border. This blocks his diversion of funds for the wall. Wow.

Presidential pardons are tricky things. Ford pardoned Nixon BEFORE the latter had actually been ACCUSED of anything.

Years ago, Pres. Clinton lied under oath about an affair... now, Trump’s problems may be far bigger. His dealings with the president of Ukraine could mean an extortion charge.
Could mean up to ten counts of obstructing justice... you know, like the ones detailed by former social counsel Robert Mueller... remember that lil' report?
