I was going thru my comics looking for something else and happened on Marvel's first miniseries, the CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS. Since it had been a number of years since I read it, I pulled it out and did just that.  Were you ever approached about being involved with it in any way?

How many of the heroes introduced during that crap are even still around?

The only thing I think was good about that short mini series was the art. As a kid I was intrigued by the concept. As I got older I appreciated the art because the story fell short and seemed too much like testing the waters for Secret Wars.

Not to mention the fact the writers couldn't even keep straight who was on whose team and totally fucked up the scoring for it.

And they were so desperate to introduce new characters like a steamroller. It seems as if they went to Mark Gruenwald, Bill Mantlo, and Steven Grant and said, "Got any international characters? USE 'EM! And create a few more so we can get another hit like Spider-Man!"

And as Brian M. noted, the story was so badly written that they couldn't even keep track of who won and who lost. And the stupid idea of pitting friends against each other like Ben Grimm and T'Challa... Ridiculous.

Oh, and not to forget - this is one of five or six times that Daredevil first met Iron First. Brilliant, editors.

That series was a precursor of bad things to come. It was sort of the first Event Series. I don't necessarily mind Event Series, especially if they're self-contained (as COC was), but they've become de rigueur in order for the Big Two to rake in more dollars.

To be fair, Wolverine was against the Panther, but yes, he and Ben were on the same team. He even told Logan to dial it down a notch because he and the Panther are buds.

And you’re totally right about Iron Fist/Daredevil.

New and exciting at the time...but I was also maybe 10? Fun stuff for 10 year
old me...I'm sure I'd feel differently now, which is OK.

All I recall are some international characters that were bordering on stereotypes.
