I regard this as 100% good news: Noah Hawley is now making the next Star Trek film, instead of Quentin "of course it's going to be rated R!" Tarantino. QT's Trek is still in development, but as a genuine Hawley fan I'm glad that this is the thing we're getting first.
I was pretty doubtful about the 2009 version in the first place, but definitely had the living heck entertained out of me by it. "Into Darkness" was a train wreck, but I thought "Beyond" was also cracking-good entertainment.
Odd board-related anecdote: I shared my doubts about the 2009 film on the thread here after it was announced, and some troll who first came here to shitpost actually came to my blog and harassed me there in the comments. Weird, but memorable.
Hawley wore the helm of showrunner for the X-Men film related TV show LEGION, which may or may not influence whether you'll like what he might bring to STAR TREK. Personally, I thought LEGION was quite ambitous and unique in it's execution and well worth watching.
Let's hope they drop this creatively lazy time travel plot of Kirk meeting his father. I don't see anything good coming from a storyline like that unless it serves to end the Kelvin timeline and erase the events of these films for good.
