What impresses me the most about George Perez (and I really hope I've not mis-remembered this), is that he retaught himself to draw, with his left hand.
And it still looks phenomenal.
If I've had some form of an aneurysm and made this up, move along, move along.

I heard that about Frazetta, but not George. Somebody clue me in, please?

It is true about Frank Frazetta. Never heard anything about George and when he was in Calgary in 2012 he was drawing with his right hand.

Anyway, though I love JB's art, I feel he is underrated as a writer. He is one of the best, IMO, and if I had to choose which side I prefer I might choose his writing.

It's all about the total package. When a strong artist is also a strong writer, that's when we get treated to stuff like when JB adds to the story with body language and subtle expressions. That's the sublime stuff, if you ask me.

There's something special about a book drawn and written by a person who is equally adept at both. JB, Alan Davis, George Perez, Walt Simonson, etc.

JB's stuff is so distinctive that I'm guessing every person on this forum could identify his work from a single panel. Over the years, there have been subtle changes but there is still that classic John Byrne look.
Obviously, whoever was on inking duties over this time is going to have an influence.
I loved Terry Austin, Joe Rubinstein & Dan Green's inks as well as JB's own finishes. I was less keen on Bob Wiacek's.

I seem to recall at one point John Byrne hypothesized that when some people were saying "Your old stuff was better" what they *actually* meant was "I miss having Terry Austin inking your pencils."

The post about George Perez having to relearn to draw because of some condition he experienced is true to a degree. I recently was reading an old "Amazing Heroes" interview where that period was discussed (it happened in the late 1970s). Even though I read ot not long ago, I didn't retain the specifics. I will have to reread it again when my city's quarantine is ended, as the magazine is located inside my flea market booth, and the business is shut down a few more weeks.
