I started to get REALLY depressed when I realized I was now older than MOST of my comic book favorites.

Many a moon ago I realized that living to an advanced age just meant being OLD for a long time. Actuarially speaking, I have ten or twelve years, barring catastrophe. That should do. (Altho getting to 89 to see the 100th anniversary of Superman has a certain appeal.)

A sobering thought I had rewatching "All In The Family" a few years ago was realizing that the character of Archie Bunker wasn't even 50 years old in the first season of the series. What bummed me even more was learning that neither was the actor, Carroll O'Conner! I am now older than Archie was in that first episode!

JB, I hope you get to see Batman and Captain America's 100th anniversaries, too (and me, as well)!

John is 20 years older than I, right down to the month, so I often think about my age in relation to his when thinking about comics and what he was doing when he was my age. Think about all the stuff he did before he was 50. Wow!
More often, I try to imagine 12 and 13 year old me at the height of my own Golden Age of comics, a true Byrne victim "all in" on Alpha Flight and the death of Mac or a few years later, in high school, excited about his move to DC and Superman and what Young Ted would think if Old Ted could tell him that one day he would get to meet John in person and visit his studio. It's hard to imagine, but fun to think about. I wonder if Young Ted would even understand what that would mean to Old Ted looking back on his childhood with a fond nostalgia for the innocence and wonder of 12, again the real Golden Age of comics. Would it even mean the same thing to me then? With only a year or two of comics fandom? Could Young Ted appreciate then how much it would mean for Old Ted to meet John as future version of Young Ted? In short, I a wonder how much of our memory of and hopes for ourselves forward and backward align the reality or perspectives of our actual selves at those times.
Regardless, Old Ted thinks it's pretty cool knowing John Byrne, and I know that if not for Young Ted, that appreciation wouldn't be there today.
But 50 this summer? Wow! Hope I make it.

I wonder what Jim Lee thinks of the brown costume being considered the classic one now.

I'm also 50 this summer and I often think about how weird time is. I was thinking this morning about I'm probably about the same age now as my grandparents (on my mum's side) were when I first knew them in the early 70'.
My dad's parents died in the early 70' so my dad (who is still going strong in his 70') lost his parents before his 30's. So I've had my parents for 20 more years than he had his and I have literally never realised that until just recently.
