As we are all facing uncertainty over the next few weeks / months, and I cannot socialise like before, I've decided to pick a number of comic book runs to read over this period to pass the time. Along with watching the Marvel CU movies at one per day for the next 22 days (watched Iron Man last night), these are my picks to start with to go through. You guys let me know what you might attempt.

  • Lee / Kirby - Fantastic Four run
  • Len Wein / Herb Trimpe / Sal Buscema - The Incredible Hulk
  • Gerry Conway / Gene Colan / Don Newton - Batman / Detective Comics
  • David Michelinie / Bob Layton / JR, Jr. / M.D. Bright - Iron Man (both runs)
  • Marv Wolfman / Curt Swan / Gil Kane - Action Comics
  • Marv Wolfman / Joe Staton - Green Lantern
  • Roger Stern / Al Milgrom / John Buscema / Tom Palmer - Avengers
  • Doug Moench / Bill Sienkiewicz - Moon Knight
  • John Byrne / Jae Lee - Namor

Doug, I've not read the Englehart / Rogers Silver Surfer run in years. I remember enjoying it still after Rogers left, and Joe Staton took over until Ron Lim came on board.

If I recall, it seems to lose its way around issue 20, and Englehart goes off at weird tangents for the rest of his run. I think this was related to his ongoing dispute with Tom DeFalco at the time.

I'm re-reading the Avengers from the start of Caps Kooky Quartet until I feel like moving on to something different. If I make it to the end of where my collection ends (375), I'll re-read the Busiek run.

Shawn, I think I stopped the Avengers with 375 at the end of The Gatherers saga. Things were going downhill before then, but the Steve Epting art kept me going.

Depending on how my reading goes, I need to go back to the Busiek / Perez run at some point.

Greg, the Surfer run I have is thru an Epic Collection which ends after a couple of Staton issues at #14 so I'll (thankfully?) miss the tangent.

There's also stories by Byrne, Buscema and Kirby included. I'm digesting every panel completely!

Doug, nothing wrong with issues 15 - 20 a good story involving Galactus and the In-Betweener (read up on them before as a memory refresh). Ron Lim's art is a bonus.

Issue 21 is an Englehart / Rogers one-off involving the Elders of the Universe.

After my memory jog, it was from 22 onwards it went off the rails. Although, you can still soak in Ron Lim's great art to take away from the story.

Agreed about the first part and Englehart says it was DeFalco related, but I thought #25-31 turned it around nicely. (Per Englehart, he was given permission to do what he wanted as long as he left when it was over.)

I took the plunge a couple of weeks ago and bought JB's Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol 1. I have a few of the original issues already (and had also read others as B&W reprints in a UK weekly some years ago).

Man, the book is a behemoth!

The art is, of course sublime, even if some of the Wolfman / Mantlo tales vary quite a bit in quality. I'm thru the Blastaar issues now and already looking forward to the first JB scripts.

Ahh, joyous memories!

Great idea.

I've been thinking about rereading the Hulk of my youth - Herb Trimpe (and various writers). Sounds like a perfect time.

I recently realized that my knowledge of the Amazing Spider-Man between 50 and 100 (Stan Lee & John Romita sr.) is lacking. Less of a rediscovery and more of a new discovery. I have started this one.

I’m going to reread JB’s DOOM PATROL, starting with the JLA: TENTH
CIRCLE miniseries, next week.
