If DC folds up shop in this year, it's then possible to own every DC comic printed, ever.

Really, Joe? Printed, not published? Cool, that means I will get that "Action Comics" #1, first print, right? ;-)

What condition are those million dollar plus issues in? It would seem this collection is “worth” more as a lot than anyone could pay for it. If someone could afford the entire lot, they may be able to realize a huge turnover profit by parting it out.

I still remember a small classified ad that ran in the Vancouver Sun newspaper, back around 1981.
“Every Marvel Comic book. $2000”
That ad haunted me for a long time. Problem was $2000 to me was like a million back then, an impossible amount. Always wondered what exactly was being offered.

The amazing thing about this collection of DC comics is that it is apparently, truly everything:Superhero, cartoon animals, westerns, romance, humor, horror... everything! This even includes ashcans, promotional comics, and such. I would assume it even includes the Canceled Comics Cavalcade issues. Crazy!
Mitch, I wondered some of the things you mentioned. Clearly, anyone buying this has millions to spare. I would wonder, though, if someone so wealthy would see a need to split it up and resell it? If it is a filthy rich comics fan, besides buying it for the status symbol sort of thing, maybe they want it preserved as best as possible for historical importance and posterity. It is clearly important to Levine that the collection not be split up as he sells it, so maybe he hopes it goes to someone else who will respect the uniqueness of the collection?

Hopefully it can be digitized as I imagine there are many issues that have never been reprinted and never will be reprinted.

A better use of Mike Bloomberg’s money than his campaign spend!

I'd heard about this collection for years. As others mentioned above, Levine is known for his Doctor Who work saving episodes and helping out on the show. He's a controversial figure but I've always admired him and hope he makes some money - strange time to be doing this though...

Leigh, I thought the same about the timing. Of course, the people that can afford such a collection aren't necessarily feeling the financial pinch most of us are currently.

Leigh, I don't think Ian Levine will make any money from the sale as he doesn't own the collection and hasn't done so for quite a while.
It's just known as 'The Ian Levine Collection' because he was the person who originally collected them all together.
In Mr. Levine's own words: "Facebook, Twitter, and the entire internet is buzzing about me selling my DC Comics Collection. But they all got it wrong. In 2008 I sold them to a dear friend, for a tiny fraction of their value, with the intention of being allowed to keep them in my house until I died. But then when DC ended all their runs and reverted to restarting at number one for them all, I was so sickened that I gave him permission to sell them. They were all taken away around 2015 and every comic was examined and graded by Paul Sassiene, comic expert, for Sotherbys. I rather resent everybody assuming that I'm the one who's selling them, having in fact given up the ownership twelve long years ago. Sotherby's have had them for five years now, mainly because they took four long years to painstakingly do their due diligence. Now that they are finally satisfied that the collection is truly the most comprehensive DC Collection in the world, it is finally on sale. Fifty years hard, devoted, dedicated work, and I will always have the satisfaction of knowing that this huge collection of comics will always be known as The Ian Levine Collection."

Oh right, that puts a different spin on it. I probably read about that in 2008 but that seems like a whole 'nother world right now.

I would be delighted to own all DC's comic book product, but two thoughts come to mind.
ITEM: This doesn't seem to include all the Fawcett, Charlton, etc. comics from the pre-"Shazam!" and pre-COIE books. That's not a huge deal because it leads to my second thought...
ITEM: Why? I do not have the space to store such a collection. I don't have the resources to maintain and upgrade such a collection. And I don't have nearly enough life left to enjoy them all. Sure, I'd love to check out Golden Age Comics Cavalcade* and All-Star and Detective and Action... but I can't possibly read them all.
Further, I wouldn't want to read some of the series such as Bomba, Weird Western Tales, First Issue Special, etc.
I understand there's a certain status in owning the collection, and if one were to sell it off, it could well pay for itself... but that's rather blasphemous. The returns on that investment might be slim, and might even end up being a liability. And this seems entirely contrary to the idea of buying everything lock stock and barrel.
I mean, it'll be a great catch for somebody, no doubt. I don't think it would be me.
*Someone who may have checked this out closer - does Golden Age DC include All-American comic books? Essentials? Tabloid sized books? The Archive collection?
