The overwhelming majority of protesters do so in a peaceful manner. But some windows get smashed and the line gets crossed (whatever that means)?

Relax, it's just that there are some bad apples.

See what I did there?

Apples/Grapes.

Protesters are not empowered to protect and serve, and have to power of the shield to hide behind as a defense.

I'm not justifying looting and rioting.

Let's be honest here, an over-zealous cop went WAYYYYYYY overboard. A man lost his life. This is not new and they probably would have slid by with it.

And now, here we are. Not a good look for law enforcement all around.

Once you start smashing any business, the line
is crossed, IMO
-----------------------------------------
There we go society making the rules on how to
protest against society.
You don't get it's broken there are no rules
at least your rules.
The most coveted rule has been broken over and
over again thou shalt not kill.
Police continue to attack peaceful protestors
and the press with brutality and you are
concerned about socks or not protesting in a
fashion you approve?
Could care less about your feelings at this
moment.

To reflect, most, if not ALL of this protesting could've been avoided IF ON DAY ONE all the officers involved had been ARRESTED immediately.

It's not like the officials in Minneapolis (including Minneapolis’s police union) didn't have a clue protests would happen - it's happened many times - they just didn't care.

Ron, do you see any difference between protesting and rioting?

A week ago the nation was on the same page. Aside from a couple 'Thin Blue Line' diehards, the sole object of scorn and hatred was 4 cops in Minneapolis.
Now it's open season on rioting. Just 'cuz. When does it stop? Not when a trial drags out. Not when any of the cops get sentenced (because no matter what the sentence is, it won't be enough in many people's eyes).
If 'a fashion we approve of' is just a couple steps down from The Purge, well, what does that say about The Rule of Law when we can throw it out because... well, just 'cuz?

Michael, the problem isn't that Ron doesn't see the difference between protesting and rioting. The problem is that the police don't see the difference.

Wanna see some EPIC looting?

Check out your local museums.

So the attempt to shift the focus of the protests from “outrage over police brutality, corrupt police, murder and racism” to “I hate it when people steal TVs and Nikes” has apparently taken hold.

The country was founded on civil unrest and rioting.   Americans riot for the darnedest reasons.

Police murders and unarmed black man while handcuffed?  Let’s riot!

The Celtics lost a heartbreaker in Game 7?  Let’s riot!

The rioting in my opinion is being hyped up both by purposeful agitators on the ground and among the protestors (including some cops) and political forces behind the scenes.  GOP politicians are making it a point to publicly make EVERY conversation about the protests into a screed about “thugs” “lawlessness” “vandalism” “looting” And Trump is being gassed up to react accordingly.

Donald Trump doesn’t want a race war.  He NEEDS a race war.

Because the tea leaves are saying that his ass is going to lose to Joe Biden and if that happens his protection from the law as President is over.....and his fat ass might go to prison.

Since the economy is shot and unlikely to improve significantly by the fall, he has nothing to taut to make a case for reelection.   And since his attempts to start wars overseas have largely failed he is turning the unrest here at home into just the kind of racial wedge he used to get elected in the first place.  Only this time it comes with big doses of “military strongman” posturing because he wants to be seen as a wartime president.

The unrest in the wake of George Floyd's murder has put a bomb in Trumps hands.  I believe the hardcore Trump supporters (the gun toting, radical types) look at this as their chance to light the fuse on his behalf.

At what point do the gloves drop? At what point do you accept that a group of people have been pushed too far and react with violence?

Let's say women were stopped by the police on average 4-5 times more than men and rather frequently they were rapped when stopped. When do you result to violence when the "few bad apples" can't be stopped from rapping?

Did you see the Amy Cooper video? That woman knew exactly what to do in order to possibly get that man recording her killed by the police. Did you see how quickly she went to the faux distress voice over the phone?

I'm not condoning looting and violence, but when the horror that a particular group of people are suffering from boils over AGAIN how can anyone criticize when they dump tea in the harbor, or blow up the death star, organize a resistance and oppose the brutality that has been levelled on them for decades?

Peaceful and violent resistance have been resorted to for a very long time and I think anyone that can't look past the problems with a resistance certainly cannot fathom what has caused the resistance to rise up. Also, it is quite possible that the people doing the looting are not part of the peaceful protests.

If Derek Chauvin had knelt on the neck of a pit bull for nine minutes until it died there would be a more unified resistance against him. The pit bull had a history of violence and back in 2017 it bit a person! The public outrage would rival what is currently occurring. I dare say an animal's life is considered more precious than a black man's life in the US.The US levels the death penalty with the police force on the street for a portion of the population that is suspected of misdemeanour crime. That portion of the population is not white.

Cautiously optimistic... theyve upgraded the charges for the cop from 3rd degree to second degree murder. They must feel they'e already got enough to go for it instead of charging-up after the trial has started.

And the three cops who stood by and did nothing have been charged with Aiding and Abetting Murder.

Next weeks headlines is going to be hospitals overwhelmed with protesters who have come down with Covid-19, followed up by declarations that they knew the risks and willingly sacrificed themselves.

Notes from Los Angeles:

I don't see "riots" - that term started for Los Angeles on Saturday, where
protestors and looters were all in one jumble, up and down Fairfax.

On Sunday, we saw in Santa Monica the start of what would become the true
nature of these historic events. Protestors walked down Ocean Avenue, while
the looters showed up in the commercial districts of Third Street and Fourth
Street, stealing with a practiced precision. The distance between the two
spoke for itself. These are two separate actions happening simultaneously -
protesting and looting.

I recognize that it is not as simple as two categories - there is so much going
on here that it can't be defined simply. Racism is so powerful that social and
financial inequality are baked into it, reflected in looting and destruction of
property.

Some of the destruction of property is indeed by protestors, and I find myself
in full support of it. Years ago I would not condone anything like this, but this
is a human reaction to appalling behavior and societal inequity. A burned out
police vehicle is nothing compared to our president using tear gas on peaceful
protestors to get a photo op.

It's difficult to support looting, especially when the people doing it aren't
protesting change - they are just taking advantage of chaos. But I also can't
equate looting with the death of an innocent man. The sum total of all
buildings looted and cars set on fire does not come close to the value of the
life of George Floyd.

This explosion is the result of years of protest ignored. It is justice neglected.

We are witnesses to history - this is the culmination of prolonged injustice,
mixed with an unprecedented shutdown of what we considered accepted and
normal life. And unlike past uprisings, we have more cameras filming this than
ever before. We have wall to wall TV coverage mixed with eyewitness camera
phone footage. Each day brings a new version of ROSHOMON as the situation
is more complicated than it appears.

I applaud the protestors braving the streets to make their voices heard. A
bonus to the extensive camera coverage - we get to see a very diverse group
to protest this issue. Young people are out there, demanding change. As a
white man of societal privilege, I hesitate to speak up - I can't truly empathize
and risk sounding like a dumbass. But I have to say something because, even
if this is a clumsy attempt, I must express that I am an ally of the protest during
such difficult times under an oppressive and racist president.

I join the protestors in asking we all keep this mantra on our minds and in our
hearts as a guiding principle in how we move forward:

Black Lives Matter
