The rumor as reported in the late 1980s "Comics Scene" magazine had it that DaFoe was in the running for the role, before ultimately going to Jack Nicholson.

Dafoe would've been a great Joker for sure. Apart form STREETS OF FIRE (awesome, underrated film) his performance on WILD AT HEART is also a statement to that.

He ended up being a "jokerized" Green Goblin instead. Strange how the Joker archetype was, and still is, the dominant "acting way" for comic book villains on film even when the character to portray is nothing alike.

Gyllenhaal was always rumored to be Peter Parker (I personally don't think he's that good of a match) and when he got too old for the role ended up playing Mysterio, quite successfully IMHO. Funny how things end up.

When Terry Gilliam took on the Watchmen film back in the 80s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was rumored to be the casting choice for Dr. Manhattan and Tom Cruise for Ozymandias. It's strange to imagine it, but when I think of it they're both kind of brilliant choices. Sure seems more interesting compared to what we finally got in the Snyder film (Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach was flawless though, one of the film's few merits)

I seem to recall Moore expressing disdain for the casting of Ah-nold. At the time, I thought "It's called ACTING."

It definitely would've been weird hearing him monologue about the nature of time and the infinity of the universe in his thick germanic accent.

But he had the otherworldly thing down. He even got to do the bald and blue skinned thing years later in BATMAN & ROBIN!

Schwarzenegger, at the time, would've been too buff, I think.

The only parts of the WATCHMEN movie that I liked were the Dr. Manhattan scenes, without any costumed characters. The Phillip Glass music was a nice touch.

There is a radio and TV presenter in the UK called Richard Bacon, who looks like a fairly good Reed Richards

And if we have Reed can Sue be far behind?  The radiant Grace Kelly, surely a partial inspiration for Jack Kirby?

Works for me! He has an otherworldly look to him (his eyes seem further apart than is typical) - kinda why I liked Benedict Cumberbach for Doctor Strange.
