Eric -- right, true. That's why I said most superhero comics. I realize that Captain Comet, Martian Manhunter, etc. weren't '40s holdouts. That said, they didn't "set the world on fire" like the Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), etc., did in terms of popularity.

(Insert joke here involving J'onn J'onzz and fire...)

Of course. And at the time, no non-DC super heroes really did. I seem to recall that even Captain America and the Torch and Namor strips started going horror at Atlas.

J'onn J'onzz and fire... that's a hot one!

James, I have to say if you left after JB's run, you missed some great stuff from 1988 - 1992 by Stern, Jurgens, Ordway, Gammill, Perez, McLeod, Grummett, Simonson and Bogdanove.

I felt the wheels came off a little after The Death / Return of Superman, and the Superman Red / Blue arcs, but there was still a lot to enjoy until Dan Jurgens left the titles.

I think it was the consistency that the teams provided for 10 years on the books.

The recent runs before Bendis by Jurgens and Tomasi were good as well.

Greg - my brother was still buying the titles - he was a
true Superman fan. So I kind of followed what was going
on, but found it didn't really resonate with me.

I agree with Greg. I'd say "MY" Superman starts with Man of Steel and ends when Dan Jurgens, Louise Simonson, and Roger Stern were finished.

What I liked about that period of Superman was that even though everything was interconnected, the titles still followed their own paths.

  • Dan Jurgens focused on sci-fi elements
  • Roger Stern focused on Luthor, Intergang and Lois
  • Jerry Ordway had villains and fisticuffs
  • Louise Simonson gave a focus to the supporting cast
