Yes, and even self-misunderstood godlike beings.

Not... very godlike, eh?

Maybe Galactus wasn't godlike enough...?

•••

I’d not thought of this before, but if Shooter had not insisted on forcing his Beyonder Mary Sue down our throats, SECRET WARS could have told effectively the same story, but with Galactus.

Consider: having been turned away from Earth several times, Galactus wants to understand what is in the intrinsic nature of human beings that allows us to do this. The story could then have followed the same formula as SW, and eliminated the negative impact of pulling Galactus into the story to meet the demands of a toy line.

(At the time, I asked Shooter how and why Galactus would even be there if the Beyonder’s intent was to study and understand humanity. All I got was double-talk.)

I don't even remember there being a Galactus toy.

Ultimately, I don’t think there was. Double whammy.

Having Galactus be the mover behind SECRET WARS would have been brilliant.

I like this so much better than what we got...

Unfortunately, Galactus has too often been relegated to being what a Mary Sue beats up.

In SECRET WARS II, for instance, he was Franklin's version of "Frankenstein Jr.," nearly mindless and at Franklin's beck and call.

In ULTIMATES, he's been changed into a Lifebringer... but still got his butt kicked a few times by higher-level celestial types.

And in MARVEL ZOMBIES: RESURRECTION, his undead body is literally home to countless zombified aliens before it crashes down on Earth. (This AFTER Galactus was eaten by super-zombies in the original MARVEL ZOMBIES mini.)

After a while, Galactus just becomes a big purple punching bag.

I believe Galactus was also bested by Lunella Lafayette.

It's reminiscent of my time on WONDER WOMAN, when I found half the writers at DC wanted their character to f*ck her.

And that is just so damn sad. I hope you didn't have to hear the same cr*p from writers who wanted She-Hulk in their book for the same reason.
