Oh yeah, maybe it was Hank Pym and not Don Blake. The women could have hair styles back then but the guys were lucky to get a mustache to distinguish them from same-hair syndrome.

Seems like I remember seeing that more than once into the seventies.Kirby had Don Blake frail, almost sunken. Steve Rogers should be the square, cleft jawed man. Hank Pym and Clint in between them two.Gotta be tough tho in a 2D world but the good artists find a way.

•••

And the REALLY clever artists avoid the scene altogether!!

You are truly the master of the corner box sir.  I think this is where I first recognized an artist as a youngster.  I distinctly remember that realization while reading either an FF or Avengers back in the day - “hey, I think this is the guy that draws the heads.”

From a marketing stand point-- I actually spent money (as a kid!) on comics
that had those Byrne heads -- hoping they indicated something inside.

Sometimes it didn't pay off so well... but the heads were strangely effective at
grabbing attention from this customer.

I thought the height of the corner box was on Fantastic Four staring #235/239 where you got one figure and three heads usually, and there was a rotation to who go the full figure! There was a nice figure one for Daredevil a little into the Miller run, and Spider-Woman got a figure on the last few Leialoha issues. Large teams can do well with the multiple heads approach, although I never disliked the phasing Vision one that was on The Avengers for awhile, or the early X-Men ones with them in action and either Angel flying above the logo or Professor X emanating mental waves! :^)

Definitely. Of course you did so much more, JB, but those corner box heads were legendary, part of the firmament of Marvel comics.

Who's the guy between Black Widow and She-Hulk in the corner head collage one page back?  I don't think I've ever seen that particular one before... is it Rick Jones?

I have a question: these heads re-appeared in OHOTMU and OHOTMU deluxe. Were they just photostats of the Byrne/Austin originals, or did Joe Rubinstein rework them? My memory is not 100% on this, but I thought Rubinstein was the only credited inker for OHOTMU (I know he didn't do the reproduced panels).

I’ve wondered that, as well, Peter.
