Just read a mini-review that said my take on the Doom Patrol “relies too heavily on flashbacks”. Typically, no evidence offered in support of this statement. Feels a little like “well, I have to find SOMETHING wrong!”I don’t recall a lot of flashbacks. Opinions?

What flashbacks?
The only issue that contained many flashbacks was from SECRET ORIGINS Annual 1.
People looking to stir shit.......

Maybe they are confusing the term. I do recall that you tended to start DP issues with scenes in the middle of the action, then work your way back to show how the situation unfolded. But I wouldn't call that a 'flashback'.

I don't think memories are flashbacks. There are a couple where Cliff recalls his accident and how he got to become Robotman - but that's hardly a flashback.

Are the origins of Grunt and Nudge shared via flashback? You can never have too much of those two!
Anyway, this thread provides me with an excuse to say again that I really enjoyed that DOOM PATROL run! If I had to offer a complaint, it would be that the series started with vampire stuff from the JLA mini- series, but that is the smaaallest of quibbles. Infinitesimal even!

Probably some ingrate that doesn't understand non-linear storytelling where a story will begin in the middle or at a crucial moment and then 'flashback' to hours or days ago to show how things got to that point. IIRC there were a few of those. Of course that's also a pretty common tool in comics as well, so maybe just what Gundars said.

Best and most enjoyable version of Doom Patrol that I ever read. Frankly, I wish that JB and Paul Kuppenberg would take all of the original characters that they created in their separate DP runs and create a brand new superhero team comprised of those characters as well as some additional brand new characters. Of course that most likely will never happen given recent events over at DC.

Interestingly, I thought season 2 of the TV series had too many flashbacks (and family drama).

JB: As I recall at the time (unless my memory, like the rest of me, has started to go), you said that the time-jumping narrative structure in Doom Patrol was your concession to the idea of 'writing for the trade'?
I will say that as I was buying it monthly, I did initially get confused when each new issue started in medias res. I think of it as an artistic experiment that I wasn't on the wavelength of, particularly with my buying/reading habits of the time. Since I didn't pay that much attention to my reading hobby then, I kept figuring that I'd forgotten the cliffhanger from the previous issue - until such time as I realized that it was a specific storytelling format and choice.
