Wow, kicking off this new story with a glimpse of the D'Bari aftermath (from the POV of a space traveler coming home) and... Namor? Taking a swim in Jamaica Bay?

Nice...

What was Namor’s deal around this time? He was basically a straight up superhero, right? Not a sometimes-super-villain like at other times? Or am I misremembering the era?

Again, in the context of ELSEWHEN, you shouldn’t concern yourself with what was going on in “the rest” of the MU at “the same time”. Every page carries this series further and further from “home base”.

As an example, altho I wanted to address the D’bari story in X-MEN, I didn’t stay long enough to do so, so later I did it in SENSATIONAL SHE-HULK. I’m deliberately avoiding looking at those issues so they will have no influence on what I’m doing here.

What a way to start the new issue! I love how you entangle and touch on the more obscure elements of the Marvel universe. That is part of what made that (Silver) era so special---a deep history that sometimes the reader knew nothing about...but it just felt more real because of it.

Namor (if it is him) has such a presence and history---going way back to the 40's (...amnesia in a flop-house, etc.). Like the Surfer or Dr.Doom, when used sparingly, he's enigmatic, complex, and lends gravitas to any situation.

Too cool.

EDIT:  What modeling software did you use for the ship?

KUDOS on that totally alien “feeling” interior!    Fantastic image!

" Like the Surfer or Dr.Doom, when used sparingly,..."

...

I read somewhere that Stan purposely kept the Surfer's appearances sparse, to the point when he was no longer writing, even a cameo would have to get his personal stamp of approval.

Love the new pages especially that last
panel with D'Bari.

Not complaining or anything like that,
sometimes I feel a little lost not
remembering who these characters are and
their history right away.

If I may be so audacious, Mr. Byrne, I believe that Stan would approve of the Surfer's appearance here.

"A slender powerful figure cuts through the water"...

I'll cheat here (speculating!) and assume that it's Namor. Because A) the figure looks SO Namor (save for heel wings, and I assume the wings just fold back when he's not flying) and B) I can think of no other Marvel character who can be described that way*. Stingray isn't exactly slender in profile, and when I think of Triton, I just don't think of slender, and C) NO ONE ELSE ever describes Namor with that particular phrasing. Art with words, Mr. Byrne.

The D'bari ship is gorgeous. And the agony on the pilot's face is almost palpable, notwithstanding the alien features. My heart breaks on its behalf. And now the Shi'ar Empire can be added to the list of those planetary systems destroyed by the Phoenix.

Boy, does she have it in for races with apostrophes.

* Oh, possibly Lyra or Dorma. But this silhouette looks like neither of them, and neither of them seemed powerful.

Gorgeous and worth the wait.

Thanks to Eric - I wouldn't have spotted the doll's head if he'd not mentioned it!

"Save for heel wings"

Eric - I'm seeing heel wings ? And pointed ears to boot.
